We’re looking forward to introducing you to Filipe Oliveira. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Filipe, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Playing guitar. I can easily spend hours on end playing alongside my favorite records on a console. That, paired with a good drink, is my definition of a great evening.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Filipe Oliveira, and together with my wife Joana, we created PoBo Lifestyle. Some readers may remember us from a previous feature, and I’m excited to share how our brand has evolved since then.
We’ve always been passionate about music, mid-century design, and lifestyle. This became even more evident when we moved from Portugal to Boulder (the reason behind our brand name). We felt the need to bridge our two worlds: Europe’s history and the artisan work honed through generations of craftsmanship, and America’s love for design storytelling and a more experiential way to enjoy music.
The PoBo consoles result from that combination. Our clients, now across the U.S., can spin their record collection on a beautifully designed 60-year-old music console that looks and sounds brand new. They can also connect it to the sound system of the whole house and manage it through their phones. Not only is each console unique — no two are alike — but every detail is chosen to spark connection, nostalgia, and beauty in modern homes.
For us, music listening is more than an activity – it’s an experience, so we wanted to create elegant, sound-enhanced spaces for it. We looked into tradition for the answer and just launched our functional art pieces: sound panels and acoustic rugs. They are tactile sound-absorbent works of art, each one handcrafted from 100% locally sourced wool using Portuguese traditional techniques.
This is the ultimate combo for elegant modern homes, where music plays a central role.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I’ve had many positive influences throughout my life, but the most predominant one has been my father. From an early age, he taught me to approach every task with dedication and discipline — if you’re going to do something, do it right.
That mindset has stayed with me and shapes every step of the PoBo Lifestyle process, from the first moment I open a console in our workshop to the moment it comes alive again in a client’s home. It’s my way of honoring the values he passed on.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I almost gave up on learning kitesurfing. There are so many forces to manage: the wind, the waves, the board, that it felt impossible at times. I’d watch more experienced kitesurfers and feel frustrated, convinced I’d never get there. But I kept trying, falling, and getting back up until one day everything clicked. I’ll never forget the feeling of riding upwind for the first time, watching the sun reflected on the surface of the sea. That turning point was nearly 20 years ago, and kitesurfing has remained one of my greatest joys ever since.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
For me, true connection comes from being fully present. If it’s work, I commit myself completely. If it’s time with Joana and the kids, I want to be there wholeheartedly. And if it’s with friends — playing music or going to concerts — I let myself truly enjoy it, without a to-do list running in the back of my mind.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
In a time when most of the relationship between brands and clients is automated, we are old-school. It’s really us picking up the phone, replying to emails, running social media, all of it. Maybe that is the reason why so many of our clients became our friends.
