Sidni Cooper of Baton Rouge on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Sidni Cooper shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Sidni, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of working, cooking and exploring new hobbies to see what resonates with me as I get older brings me the most joy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Skye, a Black Romance author. My goal is to pen stores that touch those with similar experiences, and to leave them feeling like at least one of my characters relates to someone they know.

Recently, I’ve decided to step out of my comfort zone and dabble in fantasy, if for no other reason than to prove there’s no reason to keep yourself boxed in. Representation can come in all shapes, sizes, genres, and tropes!

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child I always believed I was bound by rules, and that I had to follow certain formulas. The older I grow, the more I embrace the idea that there’s no right or wrong way to live life and there’s no such thing as perfection. Take as many side quests along the way as you can!

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Several. The key to pushing forward is a combination of having a great support system and being honest about needing their support.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Any version of me will always be the real me. I pride myself on never watering myself down, and always sticking to what I believe no matter who may or may not like it.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Yes. Several times. It’s one of the things that help me get to a point where not getting something I want doesn’t bother me as much as it once would have. Rejection is protection and the things we want aren’t always what we need.
