Story & Lesson Highlights with Jennifer Forrest of brooklyn

Jennifer Forrest shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Jennifer, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What battle are you avoiding?
The battle i’m really avoiding is putting myself out there. I don’t love social media, but I know it’s sort of a necessary evil when wanting to show the world your work.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a painter born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, but met the love of my life in Brooklyn and that’s where we are (for now). Even though I currently don’t live in the South East, my paintings reflect my childhood growing up in Florida and the love I have for the landscapes and wildlife there. That love of the environment and animals has led to up-cycling all those canvas totes that have been piling up – which, let’s face it, we all have too many tote bags.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My dad taught me the most about work as a contractor. He gave me a work ethic that I cannot shake because he spent his whole life making sure that not only was our family taken care of, but that his clients were as well. Following through on promises made is something that has stuck with me and I have my father to thank for that.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Every artist has a period of struggle, no matter what the medium might be. My husband is a writer and I see him struggle sometimes, but the most important thing that I learned is that sometimes suffering teaches you the lesson of continuing with your art. Everything in life is temporary, but the art we create can last forever.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
My art teacher, Richard Chamberlain, who created incredible artistic pieces after his experiences in the Vietnam War and I would love for him to get his due. He is responsible for my love of painting.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m painting in the studio, but also when I’m walking in the forest and swimming in the ocean. All of them inform the other and all of them are my happy places.
