Duncan Therrell shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Duncan, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Who are you learning from right now?
Recently, I’ve been drawing a lot of inspiration from the artists Glaive, re6ce, and Kmoe. Both hyperpop, post-hyperpop, and alternative artists which are genres that I’ve been heavily interested in. The clean but fuzzy sound is so nice, and you can definitely see this upcoming project being influenced by that.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Duncan Therrell, a singer-songwriter, artist, composer, and producer. I created Lost Foxes, my alternative and post-hyperpop music project. I’m about to release my next album soon, and I’m very excited to share it with the world!
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I learned most of my skills in music from pressing buttons, listening, playing instruments, and seeing what happens. I am almost fully self-taught, other than my 2 years of piano lessons. I mostly learn from doing and listening. I like to listen to music and see if I can emulate specific sounds in the song. Another resource I’ve learned a lot from is YouTube. Aries, one of my favorite artists, used to be a YouTuber. He made tutorials on how to re-create popular songs from that year. His skill and progression to what he’s doing now are very inspiring.
When did you last change your mind about something important?
On my last album, To Get Used To You Gone, there is a song called “Imposter Syndrome.” When I completed the song, I thought it wasn’t good enough to go on the project. I almost cut it, but I decided to keep it. I don’t know why, but I did. Now, it’s a lot of people’s favorite track on the album. I thought if I had cut it from the album, nobody would’ve heard it.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
“Lost Foxes” isn’t that different from the real-life “Duncan Therrell.” Honestly, it’s probably the more vulnerable version of me. I put so much of myself into my music, and most of it is stuff I wouldn’t tell someone in person. So, yes, I would say that the public version of me is the real me, just a bit swaggier.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What false labels are you still carrying?
I feel like a lot of people tend to label someone as whatever they’re best at or whatever they do the most. Like, someone would label me as a musician and they’d put me in that box. I want to prove that I’m not just a musician. I want to prove that I’m an artist, a storyteller, a writer, a creative, etc. If we stop putting other people (and ourselves sometimes) in those boxes, I think we’d all feel a little freer to explore new things.
