We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Heather Victorino a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Well, my mom always says that I’ve been singing since before I could even talk, so I believe I have always known that my purpose is music and connecting with people through my music. I’ve felt from a very young age that I wanted to be a singer-songwriter and share my gifts with the world. I feel as though God planted that seed and I’m thankful that my mom saw my musical talents and nurtured those. I started taking voice lessons, piano lessons, and songwriting at the age of 6. I’ve honestly just always known music is my purpose and the reason I was created.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a country singer/songwriter and recording artist in Nashville, living my dream. I’m blessed to be able to tour, play at the top Nashville venues, play writer’s rounds, and of course, write new songs every week.
I am extremely humbled, blessed, and honored to be able to say that I am a 7 time music award winner of the JMA’s and UMA’s. I sometimes have to pinch myself just looking back at some of these wonderful and beautiful moments I’ve had recently.
I feel honored to have also won numerous awards, contests, and medals for both singing and songwriting. It can be really challenging as an independent artist but I’m proud of my accomplishments and how far I’ve come. Looking back now, it truly humbles me to my core to know that I have now headlined 5 successful tours and was featured twice on the cover of a global fashion and music magazine. Like I said, sometimes I have to pinch myself to make sure this is actually my real life.
I think the thing I’m most excited about is recently signing with mailman media music. We will be releasing new music soon and we have been working on a special project I’m excited for everyone to hear! LJ Fino has been wonderful and truly believes in my music and my gifts, so it has been such a positive experience working with him so far.
I have always been working closely with Ed Henry with Real America’s Voice. He has been not only supportive of my music, but he also cares about my voice as an artist and as a woman from the south with traditional morals, values, and beliefs. As a woman in this industry, it is nice to know that our voices are being heard.
Aside from music, I am also very passionate about giving back to the community. I worked closely with feeding Nashville in delivering meals to people and families in need and also started a children’s choir for a local orphanage while living in Texas. I’m also passionate about performing at nursing homes, and hospitals. I feel like God gave me this gift for a reason and it’s my duty and purpose to help others through music.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I live by this quote by Dolly Parton, “Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”
This quote alone has helped me in times of doubt in becoming the artist I am today. But if I had to choose just 3 things that were most impactful in my journey, it would have to be my faith, my family, and my resiliency.
My faith and family have made me who I am. They keep me grounded and are both there for me when I need them most.
And my resiliency, well, that is just simply me being there for myself when I need me the most. There have been so many “no’s” and closed doors on my journey, but my resiliency is what makes me push through those hard times so that I can continue to live in my purpose every single day.
If I could give any advice to someone who is just starting their journey, it is to find your purpose, and find your people. Once you have those two things, you will be unstoppable. There will be bumps along the way, but when you have people who love you and believe in you, and you truly believe in yourself and know your purpose, there’s nothing that can get in the way of you pursuing what is meant for you.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My mom is a single mom and raised me and my three sisters completely on her own. The impact of what my mom has done for me is difficult to even put into words but she gave me all of the tools I needed to be successful as a woman in the music industry and in life.
Musically speaking, she got me voice lessons, piano lessons, helped me write my songs when I was in kindergarten and didn’t even know how to spell yet, she drove me to my gigs every single weekend and she sat in the front row with my sisters, cheering me on. She made sure I was able to tour with my show choir, and figure out my purpose and if this is the life I wanted. The list goes on and on of what she did for me to help me pursue my purpose.
But aside from music, the most impactful thing she did for me, was teaching me how to be a strong, independent, fierce, fearless, resilient, passionate, driven, loving, kind, confident woman.
I may have been given the musical tools I needed to become a great artist, but these qualities she taught me have allowed me to be the fierce woman I am as a female in the country music industry.
I will never be able to repay her for all that she has done and continues to do for me.
