Scorpio shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Scorpio , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day usually start with me meditating shortly after waking up. I find that doing this keeps me centered and better prepared for any shifts that might happen throughout the day. Afterward, I pick up my guitar and just start playing whatever comes to mind—anything from my favorite songs to music I’m currently working on. It’s really a practice of letting melodies/ideas flow freely and being guided by different chord progressions. After some time, I get ready to move my body and exercise. That’s typically what the first 90 minutes of my day look like.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Peace, I’m Scorpio — for those who are lovers of the stars it’s my middle name, not my zodiac sign. I released some music in 2017 under Cam Calloway, but this new chapter is about authenticity, freedom, evolution, and creating without limits. One of my favorite quotes is from Miles Davis and it says “you have to play a long time to be able to play like yourself” and it’s something that resonates with me now more than ever.
If I could describe my sound it’s definitely soulful, raw, and unafraid — built on love, intimacy, chaos and the moments that move my spirit. I’m influenced by many different musical styles that range from r&b, rock, hip hop, classical, country, funk, indie, reggae and so much more. Music and art is everything to me, this shit is so special to my heart
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
One of the main people that immediately stands out is one of my best friends, Rasar Amani. I started pursuing music full time in 2015. We met at an open mic in Las Vegas called the Human Experience. We vibed well right off the bat and connected on so many different levels, we definitely were 2 kindred spirits. I was young and wasn’t entirely sure where I was going with this & at this point he had already made a career in music for about 15 years. But the thing that was so special was that he really saw something & wholeheartedly believed in me even before I saw something in myself. He was an incredible MC, poet & intellectual, so to have someone like that in my corner meant the world. Unfortunately he passed away in late 2021 but his energy is something that I carry with me wherever I go.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There were a few moments when I almost walked away from music these last 10 years but the deepest one hit in early 2022. My best friend who was like a brother to me passed away unexpectedly and shortly after, other parts of my life started to fall apart. Change was happening quickly & all at once and it really rocked me to my core. I was going through a very deep depression & needed time to figure out what was happening within and around me. It was overwhelming.
During this time there were 2 things that really stood out. First, identity. Who are we when life strips away everything we thought defined us? Who am I without the career, without certain people, relationships, and without the titles/labels? Those were some of the questions that bothered me for the longest time. My confidence was nowhere to be found, I was heartbroken and honestly felt very lost.
The second thing was my music. There were too many moments on this path where people in certain positions made me feel like I wasn’t enough — like I didn’t live up to a certain “industry standard.” It was a feeling I couldn’t shake. Working with producers became very frustrating because they kept trying to box me in, or tell me how I should sound and honestly it pissed me off. There’s already so much bullshit in this industry built to work against the artist that all of this was starting to drain my passion.
So I said f*ck that. I took a step back and decided to learn how to produce my own music and create on my own terms. That’s where most of the time has been spent these past two years. Somewhere in that chaos, I found myself again. And through reflection, faith, good people and therapy, I was able to fall back in love with music and most importantly fall in love with life again.
Everyday isn’t perfect but I’m in a very different space now. I’m creating from a place of my own truth, and moving forward with a deeper sense of who I am — both as an artist and human being. The music I will be releasing soon feels like the truest expression of me at this moment in time. This shit is so special & I don’t take it for granted.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I feel like my closest friends would say that respect, honesty and loyalty are things that matter to me. And they absolutely do, those are 3 core values that are huge in my world.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I like this question a lot because I often reflect/meditate on my own mortality. It honestly keeps me very present which is challenging to do these days. But when I’m gone, I hope that people can say that I was kind & respectful to every person I came across. I tried my best to uplift those around me. This world is so beautiful yet f*cked up in so many ways and because of that awareness I always try to put some good energy out there. Whether that be through music/performing or day to day interactions.
