Meet Derrick Washington

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Derrick Washington a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Derrick, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

Growing up in Columbia, South Carolina in a single parent home my mother had six children. She struggled to pay bills, as well as trying to feed six kids. She work a bunch of odd jobs. She did the best she could as a mother, seeing her struggle to provide as a parent and the environment that we grew up in in poverty, gave me the resiliency to want to be more in my life as I go into my adulthood. Going through that I knew in my life I want it to be more to my family and my kids as an adult.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I moved to Atlanta in 2015 with $500 in a car full of things I stayed in a boarding home. I slept in some uncomfortable basements. I went without food. I really struggled my first 2 1/2 years in Atlanta but when I tell you, God is everything he is everything I was able to get my clientele up. I started networking with some big hitters. I let my attitude light and hard-working, persistence and drive let me into getting my first set job as a master Barber in the film industry, I tell kids all the time let your skill set lead the way things that you love to do and you do it well and you do it professionally your craft your art is everything live in that space as a mentor Actor master Barber I plan to leave a legacy lead the way for young black men lead the way for our people all across the world to longevity, financial stability and wealth

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Be kind to people you never know who you are around who can help change your life be great at everything that you do. You never know where God will take it. God give each and everyone of us gifts and we all have to explore that be a fast learner don’t be afraid to let your light shine into success

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

I want to put God first then I want to Thank my mentors , Tonya Cryer , Byron Johnson, Victor Paz , & Jason Simmons.
I learned a lot from each, and every one of these individuals that help me progress into the master Artist I am today. I want to thank my wife for being an inspiration to me creating My global product in the film industry, which is called “HAIR PATTIES”
