We recently connected with Carolyn Yoo and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Carolyn, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
One way I recommend working through creativity blocks is determining one’s minimum creative time. What’s the minimum number of minutes you can devote to your creative work today that you can feel good about? For me the number is five minutes, just a blip of time drawing one thing in my sketchbook or writing a sentence or two. The action feels so small that you know you can do it, and you also get the confidence boost knowing you tended to your creativity.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I write a weekly newsletter called SEE YOU for a community of over 5000 creatives who want to sustain their creative practice without self-doubt or burning out. I’m also an artist creating editorial illustrations, art prints, and zines.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’d say that reflection, empathy, and resilience have been the most important qualities that have shaped my journey. To develop each, I’d recommend journaling for reflection, reading fiction for empathy, and trying different hobbies and experiments for resilience.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I love making a mind map on paper when I feel overwhelmed. The visual format of branching out information in any direction helps me make connections or see what things are central to my work or life, and what might be more ancillary and thus less of a priority.
