We recently had the chance to connect with Gwen Lawrence and have shared our conversation below.
Gwen, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I am finally building a subscription membership site. People encouraged me to do this for years, and no matter how much I have accomplished, I never felt worthy. I am proud to say this is launching, and it is so worth the nominal monthly fee for the monthly self-care Sunday class with me live online. So I feel this is chock full and “I am worthy” and “I have a lot to offer to improve the lives of others”
I am now excited and motivated again in this next phase of life.

Train Smarter. Prevent Injuries. Perform at Your Best.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My sixth-grade teacher, Mr Robbins…He used to call me “City Lights” because I stood out with my personality and the way I dressed. Also wearing some sparkle. My super hero name is “Sparkle G the Fabulous She”. When he called me that, it set in motion the idea that maybe I am special and different, and to embrace it!
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
Others convinced me that I should have my own yoga studio. This was never what I wanted. I always wanted to work only for me and somehow be on TV. These were my golden desires. I tried to back out several times, only to be re-convinced to start it, and it was an epic fail. This failure really knocked me down psychologically. I was in a hard space. I do not have regrets because I at least know I honestly did not want to do that, and to ALWAYS listen to my intuition, it never lets me down!
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I have felt that the yoga community, internally (among teachers and leaders), is not a supportive one. Over the course of my decades of teaching in this field, I have often felt a sense of alienation and competition. It makes me sad and makes me stay to myself. I no longer teach large festivals because they don’t make me feel whole. People who come are great, but the other teachers are not as open as you would think. I love this quote…
“A flower does not think to compete with the flower next to it, it just blooms!”
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
In my home. More specifically, I feel amazing in my private yoga room. I practice here, play crystal singing bowls, and all types of self-care. It has a great vibe and it is filled with crystals…If I feel stressed, down, or overwhelmed, time in this room is sure to make me right again.
