We’re looking forward to introducing you to Shelly Devlin. Check out our conversation below.
Shelly, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
For me, it’s always a sunrise or a sunset… a glass of wine or a cup of coffee and watching nature‘s art paint across the sky …I live on a lake in New England that has the most beautiful sunsets and I spent part of my time in Mexico on the small island of Isla Mujeres running women’s retreats, Where I can see sunrise and sunset from the rooftop deck!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
well, hello my name is Shelly Devlin …Truly after working for over 40 years in the beauty industry from taking clients standing behind a chair as a hairdresser to traveling across the country and running tradeshows for major hair manufacturers, I learned to listen to people …I have taken that and turned it into a travel and retreat business… in the summer holding women’s art retreats in New England, a camping adventure getting back to nature with different mediums of art… I reopened my grandfather‘s art studio And do these during the summer months in New England, then traveling to Mexico and leading solo female travelers on their own personal journeys….. i’ve spent my career listening to people and really deciphering what they mean when they speak …it’s been a very fulfilling career and in this last chapter pushing 60 it truly makes me smile to lead people to find their true and inner self and find out what brings them joy.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
This would definitely be my aunt. She gave me the tools to understand my potential and that doing what you want to do or being who you want to be is endless with no restriction. She often said to me what would you want written on your tombstone how would you want people to remember you? She set the stage with no agenda, and with no curriculum just offered up all the possibilities which were truly endless she has been and still is a big influence in my life.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I’m not sure you can ever understand pleasure if you haven’t known pain… if you can even understand success if you haven’t been through failure…. being self-employed, most of my life, a time on the brink of bankruptcy, and failed relationships. I’m still learning what that has taught me And I think or I guess the simplest answer is strength ….it teaches you how strong you are ….it makes you feel how sweet success is when you’ve known the pit of failure and these lessons will keep coming throughout your life even when you think that you’ve learned enough, the universe will continue to throw you a curveball ….and put you in check on your resilience!
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I truly think that’s what has given me success …the public version is the real me I’ve always been told I am a very strong woman it surprises people if they get a glimpse into my world where I let my guard down after the universe has given me a sucker punch to the gut, but I’ve also been real with that in the public version of me ….being genuine and real makes people feel safe and working with people closely on their personal journeys through life coaching and retreats, and even being their hairdresser or their energy healer all of those things you need to create a safe space And I think that I do that! So yes, the public version of me is the real me!
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope they tell the story of how I inspired them somehow in their own personal journey …how I was a good influence on them. There are so many people that have been a good influence on me and so many people that I have gained wisdom from some may never even know how important they were to me in my life, but I hope that the story that people tell when I am gone is of inspiration is of empowering and truly that there was some form of magic about my soul. I know that may sound quirky, but people have often said when I am involved in one of my many passion projects that they feel as if I have magic and I am honored grateful and blessed for them to feel that way.
