Vonnetta Cornish shared her story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Vonnetta, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Writing makes me lose track of time. It’s also the reason I’ve learned not to try and cook while I’m writing. Food has been burned! Equally, writing is my center. I can turn to it when I’m feeling any emotion – up, down, indifferent – and turn out something that surprises me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My path to filmmaking began when I was in high school. I knew I wanted to be a writer, but seeing Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing,” made me want to be a filmmaker. I went on to study film as part of my undergraduate degree – B.A. in Mass Communication: Film Concentration. I then earned an M.A. in Journalism and Public Affairs.
Following graduate school, I started a career in corporate communications and after 10 years I felt a strong pull to get back to filmmaking. That was the catalyst for launching Cine30 Media®.
As a writer and producer, I’m captivated by the power of storytelling through cinema and the ability to create entertaining, thoughtful experiences that capture the human spirit. What sets Cine30 Media apart is that we are focused on creating quality entertainment for diverse audiences.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that really shaped my world view occurred when I was 18 years old on a student trip to Madrid, Spain as part of my high school graduation celebration. I remember we were in one of the city parks and I went to give a homeless person some food but was admonished by one of our group leaders. I was encouraged to feed the birds, but not the homeless person. I couldn’t wrap my mind around that injustice.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If there were one kind thing I could say to my younger self it would be, “Trust God, trust yourself and your instincts because you have what it takes.”
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, the public version of me is the real me. By nature, I’m more of a private person but I’m also an outgoing, people person. When it comes to social media, fortunately, I grew up before this era, so I still enjoy engaging with people through real life interactions. However, social media is great for connecting with audiences, and I enjoy the glam moments and have fun with them, especially when they are tied to celebrating my film work.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes, I could give everything my best even if no one praised me for it. I don’t know how to stay in a “less than” mode. I’ve always been on the side of “more than” and I give my all with my time, energy, and resources available.
