Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Lynn Tang

We recently had the chance to connect with Lynn Tang and have shared our conversation below.

Lynn, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
My non-profit, United Matriarchy Nations, is dedicated to uniting women from matriarchal societies. Millions of people come from cultures with matriarchal traditions, yet much of the world remains unaware of their existence. They range in size from the Minangkabau of Indonesia with four million people to the Kihnu islanders in Estonia, with less than 1000 inhabitants. All deal with the loss of cultural traditions in this age of modernization.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Lynn Tang. I am the founder of the non-profit organization United Matriarchy Nations. UMN is a community of women brought together from around the globe for the purpose of preserving the unique heritage of matriarchal cultures. Many young people, unable to find jobs in their communities, move to cities, disconnecting them from their heritage. We plan to teach technological skills so that they will be able to continue working in their communities, allowing them to learn invaluable cultural traditions from their elders.

I will also use my experience as a film producer of 11 years to bring awareness to these cultures. They have received zero exposure in Hollywood. We will partner with community members to create films that highlight their rich traditions.

United Matriarchy Nations will also be a center of learning. We offer a yearly retreat where participants can improve their mind, body, and soul with classes, such as yoga. We also have plans to tour and meet the various matriarchal tribes in their home regions.

The organization is made up of two councils: one consisting of members of the matriarchal tribes and the other of general members who support the mission. Overseeing the councils is the executive team who carry out the councils’ decisions.

To promote our burgeoning organization, we have produced a Music Video encapsulating the UMN’s mission statement of unity and supporting women. The original song was written by composer Irelin Luo and performed by Tammie Starr, An accompanying short film will be released soon.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Several years ago, I produced “On Matriarchy Lake”, a feature film about the Mosuo minority group in China. While doing marketing research for the project, I learned about the many other matriarchal groups throughout the world. They all deal with similar issues, such as changes in family units and declining populations, but have no connection with each other. There is a clear need for an organization focused on these groups.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
There were two people who believed in my vision early on. While I was establishing the UMN, I did many media interviews to raise awareness of the cause. These interviews caught the attention of Dr. King and Mr. Dan, both Chinese entrepreneurs. They were our very first supporters and I am immensely grateful to them.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am fully committed to building United Matriarchy Nations. This is a huge project that will take years of planning, hard work, and dedication. The effort will be worth it when women are united in building a world in which they are respected and valued.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Our long-term plan is to build a physical community. We already have a 35 acre property in Wyoming. Eventually, it will grow into a full town with homes, businesses, and a shelter for women fleeing violence. We want this to be a safe haven for women across the world.
