We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kate Berry. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Kate, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Believe in myself. I want to be the best and most accomplished version of myself so I’m pushing for it. We often stand in our own way of success out of fear, I suppose, I don’t want to do that anymore.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a British travel, lifestyle and interiors photographer. I seem to move countries quite a lot, I spent 7 years in London, 7 in LA then left in search of a new home. I lived in Mexico for a little while and am now exploring Japan. Ultimately I’d like a base, but to continue to work globally. Travel has always been my greatest source of inspiration, but home is of deep importance to me too.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Fear, doubt and imposter syndrome. As a self-taught photographer I’ve always felt like I was going to get caught out somehow, that someone would discover I’m a fake. But then I realise how long I’ve been doing this and how far I’ve come, it’s important to reflect on that sometimes. I also think we have to continue to push and reinvent ourselves as artists. Being out of our comfort zones is where the magic happens, across many aspects of life.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
I feel deeply and invest in everything (even work) emotionally. Being sensitive is a blessing and a curse but I wouldn’t change it. I’d rather feel than block out pain or emotion. Heartbreak has set me back often, I think other than grief (and I believe they are similar) it’s probably the most painful feeling in the world. But I’ve always survived by allowing it, feeling it all and looking for the lessons. Then I brush myself off and try again. It’s almost the same as when I put my heart into pitching/ bidding for jobs and I don’t get them, ha! Just gotta keep on keeping on.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
That I deeply value authenticity, truth, the beauty of our planet, laughter, health and freedom. I also value my community and family.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Procrastinating! I would write the book, send the emails, see the places, buy the cameras, build the house, phone everyone and tell them I love them regularly.
