Meet Khalid Rivera

We were lucky to catch up with Khalid Rivera recently and have shared our conversation below.

Khalid, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

I get optimism from my faith in God, always hopeful for the future, and always looking at things with the glass half full not empty. Most of the time, I have to hold myself accountable and not rely on someone else to make me feel optimistic.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m Passionate to be part of stories that authentically reflect inclusion and diversity.

I was raised in New York City. I began my career on Broadway in The Capeman (produced by Paul Simon) and Juan Darien (directed by Julie Taymor). I also graced iconic stages, including Carnegie Hall, and had the honor of singing the National Anthem at Madison Square Garden.

My musical journey took off. My debut singles, Every Nite and Salvation, garnered international airplay in clubs and on radio. Salvation hit #1, and Every Nite claimed the top spot for three consecutive weeks on LOGO TV. After securing a successful record deal, I went on to self-release Who Do U Love, which charted in the top 20 worldwide and reached the top 10 in the USA Songwriting Competition for Best Dance/Electronica Song. Following this success, Music Plant Group signed me. The single, Enough Is Enough, topped the charts and earned a nomination for Best Dance Artist at the Indie Music Channel Awards. I’m no longer signed exclusively to a label and have since collaborated and been a featured vocal in numerous recordings.

Although the music career flourished, my passion for acting called me back to the screen. Since returning to acting, I’ve secured notable roles on hit shows like Russian Doll, Pose, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Broad City, as well as lead roles in film that have been released in movie theatres and streaming platforms, and theater such as Tours, Off-Broadway and regional theatre..

My ultimate goal is to contribute to thought-provoking, inspiring work that sparks conversation, and of course, brings laughter to audiences everywhere.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Always pay attention. Follow instructions. If you can’t do that, you will not prevail. This is extremely essential that most people take for granted.

2. Take the advice! When someone is giving you advice, take it in and think about it. That person cares enough to give you advice.

3. Hold yourself accountable. Don’t rely on other people to make you feel a certain way or to do things for you.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

I would travel the world, spend time with the people I love, and produced projects I love that I can be in.
