Meet Abree V.

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Abree Vance. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Abree below.

Abree, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
First, I want to say thank you for asking this question and bringing awareness to this issue. When it comes to how I have learned to own the room I am in, it all starts with having confidence, growing to love, value, and believe in myself and my talents.

Growing up I have dealt with self image and esteem issues, and it is something I still work on today. I have come along way and made a lot of progress within my journey of self discovery and acceptance by firmly believing in who I am and what I can do and achieve by the hard work I have put in to be where I am, has been a long and emotional journey but very beautiful and rewarding.

Being a black woman in this industry or any industry we have to work twice as hard to prove that we are just as capable or talented as the next man or woman. While at the same time finding new ways to innovate and challenge social norms and staying ahead of the curve. There is always a sense of pressure put on us as creatives to always do that “next big thing” on top of the pressure we may unintentionally put on ourselves to simply create.

Being in an industry that is so demanding and often so stuck on one particular beauty standard we don’t really give other groups and communities the same attention and respect as they deserve.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m the Founder and CEO of The Detroit Styling Co., a production powerhouse of creative experts from Detroit, MI. Our team includes image consultants, creative directors, photographers, cinematographers, makeup artists and beyond!

Upon founding The Detroit Styling Company, I aimed to assist others in manifesting their signature style, while also helping them discover ways to confidently construct ensembles and accessorize them. The most rewarding part of the experience with my team and our clientele has been the personal connections we’ve established to understand where they are in order to help them fulfill their goals and needs.

At The Detroit Styling Company, we provide a variety of services for our clients, such as portfolio building services for new and experienced models and talent, personal styling and shopping sessions in-person and online, photography and cinematography services, and special combo packages with added features and benefits. Additionally, we are delighted to start workshops to assist others in establishing, growing, and advancing their professional portfolios, as well as connecting new and experienced talent to agencies to advance their careers.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For as long as I can remember I’ve been into fashion, designing and styling. Coming out of high school and diving into the workforce I’ve had a lot of experience in fashion and retail.

Definitely some key things to understand is the the full scope of how to operate, build a brand, source inventory or vendors, learning and understanding marketing, conversion, and so many different aspects to build a successful and sustainable brand, product or service. Also, studying your niche and your direct competitors and seeing how they are able to grow within an ever changing industry is important.

The biggest piece of advice I would give to anyone is to literally start exactly where you are. A lot of times as people we stand in our own way and put limits on and within ourselves that we become afraid of our own potential and success or the fear of not getting sales, or getting that following or engagement or closing a major deal. When in reality we probably never gave ourselves a true fair chance to even try.

The last piece or word of advice I would give to anyone is to know that we as people cannot believe in something that we know. If you know you have an amazing product, service or anything in-between, believe in it, work hard to perfect it no matter how many “no’s” you may get or declined offers or low sales you may have, your journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Consistency, persistence, and confidence is key. Believe in everything you are and can achieve and go after it.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
