We recently had the chance to connect with Rose Grant-Robinson and have shared our conversation below.
Rose , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I’m walking a path…. I currently have cancer and was diagnosed last year. I say I am on a path because I’m juggling being a wife, a mother, a friend, and a Boss! I take all of these jobs seriously and with love. I have found that I am on a path for true enlightenment and also learning grace. I have to give myself Grace and the people I’m around as well. Not everyone knows what I am going through, and I am proud of the fact that I’m on a path that I feel good about. Even with my struggles, I’m still on the path to make sure the clients I serve are being taken care of and that they are being respected.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Rose Grant-Robinson, and I am the current Executive Director of Coastal Children’s Advocacy Center. We are an agency that work with children between the ages of 3 to 18years old who have been physically/sexually abused or witnessed a violent crime. We provide forensic interview services of those children to the special victim’s unit of the police department, department of family and children services along with district attorney’s office. Forensic Interviewing is a special way of interviewing children without leading them. It is video recorded so that they don’t have to be continuously asked questions over and over. Then, CCAC provides counseling to those children as well. There is not a time limit on how long a child can come for counseling. At CCAC, all services are provided at no cost; plus, if a child stops coming in for services, they can always come back for assistance.
CCAC is currently working on our Big Savannah Toy Drive. The children we work with are given an opportunity to put together a toy wish list for Christmas. We ask the community to pick a child or pick a wish list of generic toys to help our children during the holiday season. This is something we work on every year. This truly brings a smile to the children we serve.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mentor, Dr. Kendall Johnson of Success for Families. She saw that I could be a leader and be great at it. I procrastinated about applying for the Executive Director position at CCAC. She talked to me and told me it was time for me to step into my calling and be greater. I applied for the job on the last day of its posting, and I was called in for an interview. I was offered the position and have been running it for the past 9 years. Dr. Kendall speaks life into you and if she believes in you, you have a true friend for life. She is my true mentor, and I truly appreciate her pouring her knowledge into me.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would say, “Give yourself Grace. It is okay to make a mistake but recognize your part in the mistake and learn from it” “Don’t run from your mistakes but grow from them.”
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
My mentor, Dr. Kendall Johnson for Success for Families. I value her integrity. She will always tell you the truth no matter what and she will never break a vow for you or for me. She is the diva of truth, whether you want to hear it or not. I have never met anyone like her, and I love it. She is pure honesty, and I truly appreciate that about her. Sometimes, people sugarcoat things to make it pretty with a bow, she is gentle with you, but it will be the truth. I just love her character and I’m glad she is a part of my life.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
When, I am able to take a week off from work and I know my staff have got my back. I am at Peace because the CCAC staff have been trained well. They care about the children and the community we serve. I can take time off and not worry about the office, the victims or paperwork because I know the staff have it. They care about the victims, and they fight hard to make sure they are taken care of in all aspects of their life. I am at peace when I’m home, at work or in my car. I worked hard to get that type of peace. CCAC has the staff that is well rounded and very educated. They are advocates and take their jobs seriously. This allows me to be at peace.
