An Inspired Chat with Kid Lennon of Oklahoma City

We recently had the chance to connect with Kid Lennon and have shared our conversation below.

Kid, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I would say the thing that ive been chasing the most lately is the inner child i feel slipping away. As ive gotten older i feel like it went from “what do you want to be when you GROW UP? to “what do you want to be when you GIVE UP?”

Most of those around me gave up on their dreams & aspirations. i see the once bright eyed imaginative friends i once knew, slowly settling into the reality of bills and societal pressures. I understand and feel their pain but i refuse to give in to it.

I think if i stopped looking for and maintaining my inner child i wouldnt have it in me to accomplish my dreams. It takes a sort of delusion to keep going when all signs point the other way. To take the road less traveled. I would laugh less laughs and cry less cries if i gave up. I want the full human experience and to look back and know i gave it my all, everyday, every moment.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kid Lennon and im a self taught artist & musician from OKC. I think what makes my brand different than most is it isnt just for fans or art or music, its for the people who love the act of creating. I record my own songs, make the beats, paint the cover art then film my own reels/music videos.

Im working on doing a song per week including the beat & cover art. Im looking forward to a more consistent internet presence to further find my people and my audience.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Id say my grandma, Delores, saw me before anyone or even myself could. She passed away when i was 12 and i dont think until that moment i felt how “seen” i was around her. It was never a single act that gave me that feeling, just the way she heard me when i talked, and held me when i cried. She was sick & elderly by the time her and i were becoming best friends, but she always made it feel like the world was at our fingertips. As she set, bed ridden, i would hang out all day with her. She taught me to draw, showed me old shows, and just let me lay on her frail lap whenever thats all i needed. As i grew older and my confidence would fade, i could always remember deep down that Delo is proud of me whether i or anyone else is.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
It was the day i was leaving for my first ever tour. I had already been doing this journey for almost 10 years and was mentally and physically exhausted. I felt like the vision i had was no longer there, just a slight glimpse of what it couldve been. Yes i was finally going on tour, but it was without the people i had dreamed this dream with.

Over the years i lost my friends to overdose, mental health, and even just miscommunication. Some had families to tend to and others developed addictions that held them back. I dont think the hard reality of how much life had changed while i was keeping my head down and working ever hit me until then.

I almost gave up that day, i had to make the choice of whether i could live with cancelling the tour and staying home or if i should give it one last try. Finish the marathon, for all of the friends and family that believe in me even when i dont believe in myself.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Peace.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
When creating. Whether its painting, making beats, recording, or just a simple pencil and paper. I feel at peace when i can get the energy that builds inside out through positive means. Im a angry little child inside who just wanted to feel seen and heard. we all are.

oh yeah and meditating. obviously thats peaceful. but thats a whole different conversation
