Meet Jasmine Dixon

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jasmine Dixon . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jasmine below.

Jasmine , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
While I grew up in a pretty diverse area, I attended a predominantly white university for my undergraduate degree. I then went on to work in Corporate America where I am constantly the “only one” that looks like me. It was pretty intimidating at first but I grew to realize that I’d worked just as hard as anyone else in that room to be there. I realized I held just as much credibility to be there. Most importantly, I had a voice. I had overcome imposter syndrome and refused to be treated like an imposter.

The best advice I can give is to be confident in your self and your abilities. Just be you! People resonate with authenticity because at the end of the day we are all just people.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an entrepreneur, investor and business professional. By day, I am an aerospace and defense business development professional. With the remainder of my time I own an online women’s boutique, Slay Couture, where our goal is to make all women feel special. You can check out my website at www.slaycouturebyjaz.com

I am also part owner of 3D Investment Group, a firm that focused on real estate and property management.

I also invest in small innovative businesses i’m the fields of AI and machine learning.

I am wife to my husband, Aaron,  and mother to my son, Aaro.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most effective qualities/skills that have been most impactful to my journey is:

1) Effective communication – Listen more than you speak. You don’t learn by listening to yourself. Seem to understand versus being understood first.
2) Continuous learning – You can never stop learning. Stay hungry and eager for knowledge. It’s how you grow.
3) Servant leadership – Uplift others and give back to your community through serving. Being a servant leader not only builds trust of those around you but encourages innovation and evokes curiosity.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
First, my family has had a great impact on the person I am today. Life experiences have provided me so many lessons learned. I have numerous mentors. I am an effective listener so I am always open to hearing stories from those who have “done it before”. I want to hear what went right and what went wrong and learn from their mistakes.
