Markese Elliott shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Markese , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something that brings me a lot of joy outside of work is fitness and the gym. I love the way it makes my body feel & it is my safe space.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Markese Elliott. I’m a full-time educator with a deep passion for service, learning, and creating meaningful connections. Outside the classroom, I channel that same energy into my work in media and podcasting. I’m the host of Between the Lines Podcast—a space dedicated to education, growth, and real conversations that inspire thought and positive change.
When I’m not teaching or podcasting, you can usually find me on the field coaching flag football, mentoring young athletes, and helping them develop both on and off the field. What makes my journey unique is how all of these passions intersect—education, sports, and storytelling all serve as platforms for empowerment and community.
Right now, I’m excited to be expanding Between the Lines and taking it to new heights—bringing in more voices, fresh perspectives, and deeper discussions that continue to make an impact.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
What really breaks the bonds between people is usually a mix of misunderstanding, pride, and lack of communication. Sometimes life just pulls people in different directions, and before you know it, distance turns into disconnection. I’ve experienced losing valuable friendships myself, and I know how hard it can be to fix things when emotions or time get in the way. But I’ve also learned that if a bond is real, it doesn’t stay broken forever. With growth, patience, and the right timing, things have a way of coming back around the way they’re meant to.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self to just start. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect or for the right moment to show up, because that moment might never come. The truth is, trial and error is a beautiful part of the process. Every mistake teaches you something and helps you grow. Starting sooner would’ve shown me that progress is better than perfection any day.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
For the most part, yeah, the public version of me is the real me. What you see is what you get. I’m someone who tries to live with joy, love, and positivity, but I’m also human. I have my struggles and I definitely make mistakes along the way. I just try to keep growing and stay true to who I am. At the end of the day, I hope people see me personally the same way they see me publicly—real, genuine, and always striving to be better.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think what people might misunderstand about my legacy is that everything I do isn’t just for me. I truly want what’s best for others. Whether it’s through teaching, coaching, or podcasting, my goal has always been to help people grow and feel supported. I just hope that when people look back, they understand that my heart was in the right place and that everything I worked on came from a genuine place of wanting to make a difference for others.
