Megan Nelson shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Megan, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
I love my clients. That’s no surprise. But, what surprises me most is how open, genuine, and how much they care about our business, and our family. It’s an amazing spot to be!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Megan Nelson, owner and designer of Nest with the Nelsons, an Omaha-based interior design studio dedicated to creating homes that feel as good as they look. With a background in leadership and education, I bring organization, creativity, and heart to every project. My approach is down-to-earth and personal — I believe great design starts with truly understanding how you live. Whether it’s a cozy refresh or a full home transformation, I’m here to help you reimagine your space with comfort, purpose, and style.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was a child growing up in small town Nebraska, I often thought that girls had limits. I didn’t really know any woman who was a mother, a business owner, and running after her dreams as fast as she possibly could go. Now, I feel like that is my goal each and every day. Chase my dreams fervently, passionately, quickly, and without any apologies. All while showing my own children that they can do anything they put their minds to … and so much more!
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Late nights and early mornings are my go-to routine these days. I’m not sure who said it, but I can’t help but think that they are so right. “Whoever fails most, wins — when you get up and keep going after failing, your next adventure might be your greatest success.”
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Interior Design can be a very exclusive, fierce, and down-right mean girl atmosphere at times. I’m absolutely not buying into that! I believe in great quality design, based on your budget, every single time. I’d like to set the stage for a new wave of interior designers that are great at what they do, help others in the industry, and work collaboratively rather than against one another.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
That our homes make an impact on our wellbeing, our emotional state, and the memories we can (or don’t have the opportunity to) make with our loved ones. Well designed, beautifully calculated, delightfully curated homes do not come by chance. They are the tireless work of the homeowner, and designer who have worked hand in hand to make it so.
