Aida M Valencia on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Aida M Valencia. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Aida M, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
My Normal day is at my studio organizing and working on my next series as well as doing some commission work.My sudio is a working place so we are here from 9 to five creating, painting and cutting. materials.
We have different types of workshops here, we teach sculptures, mix media and more, in the end of each month

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My Name is Aida M Valencia I’m a local Visual Artist from the San Diego Baja Region., I have founded different organizations Casa Valencia Mosaic Art in Tijuana, this has been my studio for 30 years, Casa Valencia Gallery in Liberty Station where I introduce local Baja Artist to San Diego, there I founded the Latin American Art Festival ,we had about 70 Latin artist in the main Garden areas every year, after we closed in Liberty Station we did the Latin America Art Fair 3 times at Bread And Salt Venue!
Now I organize the International Mosaic Symposium In Mexico we are now in our second edition here in Rosarito Baja.
As for my Artwork I started in Artwalk about 30 years ago it was fun and lots of work, in the past few years i have been creating series of works that mainly are in Gallery Spaces and for collectors
I have had group shows as well as solo shows of my work, all around the globe, my works are 3D sculptural as well as mixed media,/
At the Moment My studio is preparing for another solo Show and creating a new series that is related to our environment and our commitment to preserve the natural resources we have, this will happen in May 2026.
Creating a Show takes a lot of time and effort and because I use a lot of different techniques I do work with 2 students in my studio, they have been with me for 10 years now and they are now creating their own work of art
so hopefully Casa Valencia Studio will still be around even if i’m not

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I started a long time ago, just drawing, but a Car accident kept me in bed for 2 Years so is there when I Changed a lot on the perspective of life, death and living,
I started because I was not able to walk and, on a wheelchair, I asked a friend to teach me how to work with tile, so I started creating just tables and chairs, backsplashes and commission work.
As time passed by, I started studied Ancient Mosaic, I got hooked and since then I have been learning this art mostly in Italy like Venice, Udine, Ravenna and lots of different places learning techniques and more.
In 30 Years I have developed my own style of work mainly 2D and 3D work, creating sculptural work is mostly what I love more

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Patience that is the most important thing I had to learn as well as Listening.
Those things are very important to me, Mosaic is an art form that really needs Patience., it is not like painting, when you create a piece of art with stones, colors and textures you need to know where you are hea the meaning of everything you are incorporating and what you want to say

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m committed to tell stories that can penetrate all of us and change a little what we are doing here in life..What I feel and think aa a general vison of things that all of us share

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I was a warrior of life and that I left a good example to the students that work with me in this adventure, my goal is that they can continue creating they’re on work and that I left everything for them to do so!
