Mary Rooney Armand shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Mary Rooney, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
Many people struggle with feeling like they don’t fit in. Social media often feeds this false narrative, heightening our insecurities and making us forget our true worth.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I founded the blog ButterflyLiving.org in 2019 to share faith-based stories of hope. Drawing inspiration from Romans 6:4, the foundation of ButterflyLiving rests on the profound truth that, just as Jesus was raised from the dead through the power of the Father, we too can walk in the newness of life. The website now reaches thousands of readers and addresses issues in four areas, spiritual, relational, parenting, and personal development. My goal for the blog is to encourage others to live transformed. I’ve also published two books: Uniquely Made and Life Changing Stories, a devotional collaboration. Both are extensions of ButterflyLiving’s message of hope.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
The greatest thief of relational health is unforgiveness. Words, events, betrayals, and mistakes all can cause intense pain. At some point, we have to learn to let things go and move on; otherwise, bitterness begins to take root within us. Some relationships can’t be restored and need to end so we can move on. But often it’s the little things we do wrong that start to deteriorate a relationship. Learning to communicate about an offense and find a resolution is a healthy way to thrive in our relationships.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been many times I’ve wanted to give up. Failure can suffocate purpose and drain our energy. Yet it’s in failure that we learn to trust God more deeply, discover truths about ourselves and others, and recognize when it’s time to pivot. Remembering that everyone has experienced failure helps keep it in perspective. Sometimes letting go of one thing is exactly what we need to reach for something better.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends know me well and would say that I care deeply about people. We are not meant to live in isolation, and I treasure the time I spend with family and friends. The people in my life help me live out my faith—we encourage one another and grow stronger together.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope to be remembered as someone whose faith was strong, and whose life reflected authenticity, love, and generosity. Though life brings struggles, obstacles, and wrong turns, my relationship with God has been my anchor—keeping me hopeful, joyful, and at peace. That’s the story I hope my life tells.
