We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dylan West. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Dylan, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Studying foreign languages. Each day, I do about 500 flashcards, read a short article in 8 different languages, play video games and watch YouTube videos in many languages. I’m currently focused on Arabic, German, and Greek. This doesn’t directly help me write novels or build software, but I find it satisfying in its own right. Just the process of learning new words and being able to say and read more in a language I used to know nothing about is quite addictive.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I write Christian-based science fiction and fantasy and am building a related video game, which you can play here: https://dylanwestauthor.com/demo. For fans who leave reviews for my books, I put their name into my game as a collectible item! To get monthly updates on the progress of my game, subscribe on my website: https://dylanwestauthor.com/ And to try the book, Scribes’ Descent, read a free sample here: https://dylanwestauthor.com/scribes-descent.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
When I was little, I thought I wasn’t worth much. Then, at age 11, I learned Jesus thought I was worth being tortured and ridiculed for, and that He wanted to adopt me. Ever since then, I know I’m wanted and approved of. No disrespect others may show me can erase the worth Jesus has imprinted within me. Life is now a set of memories that I make with Him.
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
I rode my bike at night in my neighborhood and imagine that Jesus was riding a bike beside me. I told Him what was bothering me and asked Him to stay and hang out so that loneliness wouldn’t overpower me.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I try to love Jesus and other people, even though I’m not always very good at it. This is far more important than anything else I try to accomplish.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Just how deeply estranged people are from each other. Nobody else really shares the same happiness and pain that we feel. Only Jesus feels that. This loneliness is an engine meant to propel us into His arms. The experiential barriers standing between people don’t have to stand between Him and us.
