An Inspired Chat with Cathy Cooper of Echo Park, Los Angeles

We recently had the chance to connect with Cathy Cooper and have shared our conversation below.

Cathy, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
wake up
make tea
feed the squirrels
feed the dog
check emails
go to the gym

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an artist with many jobs.
I am primarily a sculptor and that has coursed me through many paths: costume design and building, installation work, music, film making and performance. Call me a multi-disciplinary artist

Right now I am looking for a space to install a pice that I’ve been working on for the past 3 years. It’s about my ancestry from Mississippi. It involves sculpture, film and fragrance.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Childhood. When I got a bike, I could travel. Anywhere. It took me out of the area I was familiar with and allowed me to literally roll into new geographics, demographics. Next door was always stranger than where I lived.

What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
I have become a better listener. Because sometimes my Ideas are not the best.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
Jane Goodall
James Baldwin
Nikki Giovanni
José Andrés
Eleanor Roosevelt
Rainer Maria Rilke
Marcus Aurelius

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I was committed to my work. On every level.
