Meet Phillip Jordan

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Phillip Jordan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Phillip, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
There have been so many situations where I’ve been the only person in the room who looks like me and/or identifies as someone like me. My main thing is knowing that I belong there too. No one will ever make me feel like i don’t belong because i don’t allow that into my energy field. People who don’t have a heaven or hell to put you in surely don’t have a say of whether you belong somewhere or not.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an alternate R&B/pop artist. I’m Currently working on my debut album which explores themes of unrequited love, unworthiness, infidelity, and grief. I have currently been in an artist development season perfecting my voice, stage presence, and more! I’ve been really focusing on the next era of my clothing brand Fashionxpj as well as other endeavors. My motto this year is takeover.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Patience, Self Awareness, and A thirst to learn have been my guiding forces in following my dreams. Knowing that everything happens exactly when it’s supposed too has soothed my need-to-know anxiety about everything and truly allowed me to create and go with the flow.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My mental health. Finding release in the gym has been super helpful for me in dealing with the grief of losing my aunt who was like a second mom to me. I was the type of person to hold everything in and deal with things in private alone, however this past year has taught me that I can’t deal with it all by myself. Leaning on friends and family that I can trust has been crucial in my mental health growth and development as well as finding physical release through the gym.
