Story & Lesson Highlights with Brianna West

We recently had the chance to connect with Brianna West and have shared our conversation below.

Brianna , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day tend to be one of two routines. Either I go to the gym with my husband or if he has training (he’s a professional hockey player) I may do a workout at home. Then it’s coffee, a light breakfast and checking emails. I know it’s nothing exciting but I find that email tend to pile up and I try to make sure to get a fresh start in the day. I find it helps me be more productive.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Travel Munchers is all about helping people learn new ways to travel more sustainably. Whether that’s by learning about new technologies or products to help create less waste while traveling / staying abroad, or finding accommodations who focus or have plans to improve their sustainability. We try our best to continue to learn as the world learns and grows.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Growing up I was a very focused and driven child. Both of my parents were highly educated and had successful careers. I know I wanted to follow in their footsteps. I studied hard, played sports, graduated from high school early, graduated from undergrad early and then moved abroad for my masters in clinical and counseling psychology. I had multiple internships and I honestly did love my chosen topic of study. It was the structure which the profession required while living abroad that became the “roadblock”. I absolutely loved living in Europe and had no plans to move back to the United States. So I had to make a choice, move to continue my career or stay and find something else for income while I lived out other dreams. I chose the latter.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Life isn’t that serious. It’s messy, it’s going to challenge you and there’s gonna be times when you feel incredibly lost. That’s normal. You aren’t alone. So do the things that make you happy, even if it isn’t part of the plan. It’s okay if plans change. That’s how you grow.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Sustainability isn’t important because it won’t affect us in our lifetime. It already does, but even if it wasn’t why would we want to leave things worse for future generations?

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
She was fearless. Or at least she never let the fear control her. If she wanted something, she went for it whole heartedly. She craved experiences over everything else and always wanted to learn new things.
