Story & Lesson Highlights with Colin Biz of New York

We recently had the chance to connect with Colin Biz and have shared our conversation below.

Colin, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes, absolutely. I’d hire myself because I work hard and I work smart. I believe in showing up prepared, putting in the effort, and also finding the most efficient way to get things done. I don’t just push through challenges,I look for solutions that create real results. I bring drive, creativity, and consistency, which are qualities I’d want in anyone I hire.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Biz, and at my core, I’m a creative. I’ve been immersed in the music business since childhood, and over the years my passion has grown to encompass so much more than just sound. I live and breathe music, art, writing, film, editing, and production—anything that allows me to create and tell stories in powerful ways. I thrive on generating fresh ideas, critiquing music with a sharp ear, and discovering new talent with the potential to shape the future. Right now, I’m especially excited to be working on the follow-up to Doreen’s Favorite, a project that represents the next chapter in my journey. For me, it’s not just about making art,it’s about building experiences that resonate and inspire.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My grandmother, Doreen. She saw me clearly long before I ever truly saw myself. The way she looked at me gave me a sense of confidence and belief that I could do anything, that I could fly.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stopped hiding my pain and started turning it into power when I released Doreen’s Favorite. Losing my grandmother left an emptiness that I carried deeply, but instead of letting it break me, I decided to merge that pain with my art. That project became a way to honor her memory while transforming my grief into something creative and meaningful.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire my uncle Brian. He’s been solid for as long as I can remember, steady, dependable, and true to his word. His character speaks louder than any position or title ever could, and he’s a natural leader whose strength comes from integrity.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely. If I love something, I’ll give it my all, whether there’s applause or silence. For me, the reward isn’t in the praise,it’s in the process, the creation, and the passion that fuels it. I’d do it for free because it’s bigger than recognition; it’s about purpose and staying true to what I love. When you operate from that place, the work becomes its own reward.
