We recently had the chance to connect with Maria Glezelli and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Maria, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
What I’m most proud of building, is SecretSync, a little jewel that protects other valuables. You can place it in a safe alongside your other jewellery, wear it inside a bag, or let it hang as an accessory. If someone tries to take your bag or jewelry, SecretSync lets you trace its location in real time.
What makes it special, it’s the fact that it is made with my signature technique. Because it’s handmade using that traditional Greek wire-knitting method I revived, it retains the feeling of heritage and artistry, not cold tech. It blurs the line between jewellery and guardian. It feels original, personal, full of story, yet quietly powerful.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a jewellery designer, maker and founder of my own business. My journey started when I was a kid, when I would spend countless hours crafting, drawing, and making all sort of things. One of the most defining moments of my life was learning how to knit from my grandmother. It was a memory that stayed with me and later inspired the foundation of my work.
With a background in fine art and a passion for experimenting with materials, I developed a distinctive technique that blends my grandmother’s traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Every piece of jewelry I create is knitted by hand, making it truly one-of-a-kind.
For me, working with my hands is deeply personal. I believe each handmade piece carries not just artistry, but memory and heritage. My vision is to remind people of their roots and ancestors through jewelry that feels both timeless and meaningful. Today, I’m proud to create pieces that are not only wearable works of art but also a bridge between tradition and modernity.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a kid, I truly believed I would become a painter. I was in love with colors, textures, and the world of painting, and for many years that felt like my destiny. But after completing my bachelor’s in fine art, I discovered that my path was different. The moment I started working with metal, I felt an instant fascination. It was as if the material spoke to me.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Oh, many times. I think every entrepreneur has those moments. In the early days, I was someone who got discouraged easily, and the reality of running a business was a shock. It might sound naive, but I hadn’t imagined how much courage, resilience, and self-belief it truly takes. There were times I thought of giving up, but somehow I always came back to my purpose. Looking back now, I’m proud to still be here, growing alongside my brand. In many ways, the journey transformed me from the pessimist I once was into someone stronger and more confident.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in the jewelry industry is that faster and bigger always means better. Mass production and techniques like wax-casting are often presented as the “standard,” but in reality, they strip away the uniqueness and soul of a piece. Another misconception is that luxury has to be unattainable or impersonal, when in fact true luxury is about craftsmanship, heritage, and connection. I believe jewelry should tell a story; it should carry memory, identity, and the human touch that no machine can replicate.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace either when I’m on my yoga mat or when I’m designing a commission. Yoga and meditation are my way of connecting with my inner self and slowing down. In my business, there’s always so much going on; finance, marketing, logistics, it’s a constant juggle. But when I sit down to design a specific piece, I find my focus. I can spend hours on creation, changing my mind, and refining until I’m happy. It becomes almost meditative, and that’s when I feel most relaxed and connected to my creativity.
