We’re looking forward to introducing you to Bella Brown & The Jealous Lovers. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Bella Brown , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Believe it or not, gardening does it for me! It’s so meditative & nurturing. I feel there’s healing in caring for something other than yourself. Like medicine for the soul.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
LA based funk/soul sensation Bella Brown & the Jealous Lovers are a female fronted horn driven band delivering James Brown precision with Sharon Jones grit! Born from the creative genius of Grammy Award-winning vocalist/songwriter/dancer Carol Hatchett, Bella Brown emerges as a diva with a fiery stage presence backed by The Jealous Lovers, a musical collective of some of LA’s premier musicians.
Bella Brown & the Jealous Lovers forge a sound that’s on a tireless quest to redefine the boundaries of music by combining Soul and Funk with elements of Jazz, Rock, and Afro-Caribbean influences.
To date the band has released two EPs “Get Mine” and “Rocket”, one LP “Soul Clap”, and five singles digitally. As well as vinyl releases of three 45s and one LP.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My Mother, without a doubt! I don’t know anyone as hard working, dedicated and under appreciated as my Mom. I admire so much about her and I don’t ever think I’ll completely know or understand all the sacrifices she’s made on behalf of me and our family over the years. I also don’t think I’ll ever be able to thank her enough for the foundation and security she gave me through those sacrifices. I just make it my business to tell her I love and appreciate her as often as I can!
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When I first started studying at The University of Illinois at Chicago, it was tough to transition from my very small high school, Metropolitan High School, to such a large, intimidating learning environment. The pace was different and there were no familiar faces. It was a tough adjustment but I didn’t quit. I wanted to make my family proud and I wanted to prove to myself I could make it. Needless to say I persevered and getting that education has proved to be one of the best investments I’ve ever made.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think they would say having genuine friendships really matters to me. I have lifelong friends and our relationships are built on trust, respect and deep connections. I’m so thankful for that and the fact that we also have some really good laughs too!
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop worrying about what should come next. Staying in a present state of mind is the best way to stay happy and healthy. Also, I would stop procrastinating and just do everything right now. That sounds exciting and hopeful. I mean, why not!
