Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Shyrlia Mitchell of Jamaica

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Shyrlia Mitchell. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Shyrlia, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of creating I have so many other hobbies, but for a while now my top two have been this video game on my Nintendo Switch called Disney Dreamlight Valley. It’s a cozy game that allows me to escape reality and run my on town full of Disney characters. Another hobby I can’t get enough of is coloring. It’s so relaxing and therapeutic, definitely one of my happy places.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Shyrlia Joanee` and I have always enjoyed arts and crafts. So in 2022 I decided to try to make some money on the side doing what I love. Times are hard these days and I did not want to get a second job doing something I was not passionate about. Since then I have been “making memories into memorabilia” by designing/creating collages and scrapbooks for anyone interested. Recently I have started making personalized phone cases and bookmarks which have both been a major hit. Everything I make is handcrafted I spend most of my time printing, cutting, arranging, and pasting. It’s my place of Zen.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I would say I was a super shy super introverted person for most of my life. But recently after over a year of therapy I decided I am in my brave girl era. I want to challenge myself and do things that would normally make me anxious. I’ve come to realize in doing so I have accomplished things beyond my dreams. To the point where my dreams have become even clearer and bigger. I put myself out there on social media a few weeks ago and it paid off. Business has been booming the most it ever has since I started this journey. A clear sign from the world telling me brave is what I have to be.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been lots of times, and I am sure more to come but I always find encouragement from the people I surround myself with, family, friends, colleagues, even people on the internet. For the past few weeks, I have had requests from some of the sweetest, kindest people who all appreciate and praise the work I do. It means so much and gives me the strength I need to keep going.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
I only know how to be one version of myself. I was asked once if there was one thing I could change about me what would it be, my instant response was nothing. I love myself, while I am and always will be a work in progress, I can only ever be me.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
When I am creating. I feel a sense of calm overcome me when I am cutting and pasting. I love the way my brain works when I am in that headspace, there are times when my creativity takes hold and I kind of zone out and when I am finished, I am amazed at what I created.
