We’re looking forward to introducing you to Miss Mamie Turner. Check out our conversation below.
Mamie, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me, is getting myself prepared for college. I’m 62 and I decided to focus on myself. With the acute chronic pain that I suffer with daily, I really don’t know what normal is anymore. Fighting the pain and getting my brain back on track to study, WOW! It’s a very big challenge just to start a normal day.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a mother of 4, one is deceased. I have a granddaughter. I am the youngest of my siblings. My nonprofit is Healthy life for healthy families inc. we empower self sufficiency in families we work with, in Health, education, outreach and resources. Also I’m founder of our Tennessee State Observance Day July 28th Bullets have no Eyes bringing awareness against Gun violence. I’m an Author of two books, I know who I am and The Black History of Union City Tennessee. I have received many proclamation, one is outstanding citizen of Tennessee. My native hometown Union City Tennessee presented me with a key to the city. Bullets have no Eyes have went international, Chief Dessabre of Africa recognized me with a certificate of partnership on bringing awareness against Gun violence in Africa. Before former President Biden left office he sent me a letter thanking me for the Challenge on gun violence awareness. I have went back to college, Genesis career college for Nail Technician.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Of course my parents were the first to install great things in me. My mother was my first love, teacher, disciplinary, ect. My daddy always told me to stay true to myself, and my child care teacher Mrs. Louise Johnson saw what I never knew was inside of me. It was all about sewing a pocket on a silk shirt, when I wanted to give up, Mrs. Johnson keep me after school everyday until I sewn the pocket on the shirt. She did not give up on me, I’m so thankful for her.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
December 16th 2020, my son Lee Vern Turner life was taken by Gun violence, two juvenile stalked, hunted him down and murdered him. I know I will never get over losing my son. But I almost lost myself, I stop trusting people, I didn’t want to be around people. But I had to encourage and motivate myself and it’s not easy, everyday is a challenge for me. Some day I want to say forget it! Than other days I’m ready to face my fears and my challenges. I miss my son but I know he would want me to press forward.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m very committed to our state Day of awareness July 28th Bullets have no Eyes bringing awareness against Gun violence. Some constituents have started to recognize the Observance Day and most still pass it by, until Gun violence knocks at their door or community. I just continue to reach out to the right Representative and senator. Gun violence is an epidemic, so it’s no time limit. I’m very committed to working with the community our state and any families that will receive me.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
Most misunderstand, that what I do is not a competition, I know I have been appointed to work with families and peers on gun violence awareness. I don’t compete I educate.
