Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Dasja White of RTP

We recently had the chance to connect with Dasja White and have shared our conversation below.

Dasja, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
My first 90 minutes of my day consist of me scrolling on social media for a good laugh, then I walk my dogs. When I come back in I light my candles, refresh my hair room, and say a prayer before I service my first client.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi everyone, my name is Dasja White. I am a natural hair care specialist. I specialize in traditional/knotless braids, sew ins, crochet, and quickweaves. I will be adding more styles to my booking site soon. I like to describe myself as one of the fastest braiders in the Raleigh-Durham area. Hair is my happy place and I love meeting new clients and also love when clients return. I have a variety of clients from the ages of 6 to 80 years old. I am grateful for the service within my area for the past 7 years. I can’t wait to service new faces.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I always give my parents the praise they deserve because they always believed in me from the begining. They saw me before I saw myself. They knew their daughter would be amazing because they instilled great things in me. Anything I ever wanted to do they’ve supported me a hundred percent when it came to me and my hair business. I am forever grateful to have them in my corner.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Giving up is not an option because I love what I do. Slow season is always the hardest because the clientele decreases from my busiest months, like during the summer and holiday season. I learned to pivot while working, advertising and promoting my business. I try my best to do my content creating during my slow season, as well as I try not to get in a giving up mood when the season is slow. I try to think of it as Gods way of sitting me down for a little while.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
The cultural value that I protect the most is our crown, the crowns we wear on our heads as beautiful black women. We as black women shouldn’t be judged by the way we chose to wear our hair, it shouldn’t ever be determined if we can or can’t get a job or if we’re professional enough to be within a professional setting. We as black women should be able to wear any hairstyle without being judged or stereotyped. Our hairstyles don’t define who we are or the education we have instilled in us.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
If I had any regrets it would be not traveling as much as I like to. I want to continue being an amazing hairstylist but also still take time for me and my family. I know a lot of people work hard for their legacies but I want to work even harder for my legacy while continuing to make memories as well.
