Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Cara Bukacek of Pikes Peak Region

Cara Bukacek shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Cara, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day start at 4am. I enjoy a coffee, check and post my socials, then head down to my basement to work out. I try to exercise at least 30-60min/day. Then I take a shower, get ready, and then wake up my children to start their day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Cara Bukacek and for the last few years I have worked as a contributing writer and social media coordinator for Colorado Springs Lifestyle Magazine. I was recruited to write for the magazine after the owner discovered my food blog, Peak Thyme. I started the blog in 2021 to showcase my original recipes, share my food photography, and to write about the local culinary scene as well as my favorite food products/tools.

Before my role at the magazine, writing professionally was never on my radar. I was surprised to learn that even though I identify as an introvert, I really like meeting with and interacting with my local community. It really is an honor to learn about people, their stories, and what inspires them. Bringing their stories to life through my writing has been a privilege of a lifetime.

In addition to writing, I am an avid photographer. Food photography in particular is one of my favorite creative outlets. I have had several opportunities to submit my photos for magazine features when images were needed. Seeing my name in the byline of a published article as both the writer and photographer fills me with pride.

In addition to my work as a contributing writer, this fall I am also launching my own business, Peak Thyme Creative. PTC is a boutique creative studio specializing in food writing, food & brand photography, marketing tools, and storytelling for brands and publications. My website, peakthyme.com, has gotten a full refresh that will still include a blog and recipes featuring my favorite local Colorado food brands.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
In the early days of my blog and my job as a contributing writer, I had a bad case of imposter syndrome. I went to college to learn elementary education. I felt like I had no business as a writer because I was never formally trained to do so. I worried that people would catch on and dislike my writing style because it wasn’t literary enough.

As I gained confidence in my own personal writing style, I released that imposter syndrome. I don’t need to sound “literary” to connect with an audience. My writing comes from a place of authenticity and an intention to resonate with others.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Growing up I always wanted a job in the creative field. I talked myself out of it because in my mind, creative jobs didn’t pay well and weren’t respectable career paths. If I could say one thing to my younger self it would be, “Major in photography. You are a creative and you will find so much joy when you lean into your strengths.”

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would tell you that authenticity, vulnerability, and honesty are traits that I truly value. I don’t want to get to know people on a surface level, I don’t have the time or energy for that. Be weird, be authentic, and be vulnerable. I love getting to know the “real you” behind the public mask. And I am willing to be vulnerable and honest in exchange. This is how true connection happens.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I have always identified as a “Type A” personality. I am a hard worker with an incredible work ethic. While I appreciate being valued for my contributions, I don’t require validation or praise. I know my worth and I know that I am good at what I do.
