We’re looking forward to introducing you to Gina Powers. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Gina, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I think so many people, no matter how they look on the outside, are secretly struggling with fear. Fear of not being enough, fear of failing, or even fear of succeeding. Sometimes it shows up as hesitation, self-sabotage, or staying small when our soul is asking us to step into something bigger. I know I’ve felt it myself in my journey as an artist. But I also believe fear can be a teacher—it shows us where we’re being called to grow. The more we name it, the less power it has. My hope, in music and in life, is to encourage others to keep going anyway, to choose courage over fear, and to trust that God has a way of turning even our doubts into stepping stones.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Gina Powers — a singer, songwriter, and performer from North Dakota with a sound that blends rock, Americana, and country. People often say I have a sound that blends Stevie Nicks, Belinda Carlisle, and Natalie Merchant, but my music is always about honesty and connection. I’ve toured, worked with award-winning songwriters, and signed a record deal earlier in my career, and I continue to make music independently, drawing from those experiences to craft songs that are both strong and vulnerable. My hope is that my music offers comfort, courage, or simply the joy of singing along.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that shaped how I see the world was my mother’s death when I was eleven. It took a lifetime to process the depth of grief and the way my childhood was thrown into chaos after she was gone. I still miss her every day, but I also see how deeply precious life is, the beauty that surrounds us even in the midst of struggle and the importance of seeing the humanity in people. All of us have our differences but I see more of the common ground.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear that has held me back is the fear of not being fully seen or understood — both as an artist and as a person. It’s the fear that my work, my voice, or my story might not land, or that putting myself fully out there could lead to disappointment, judgment, or exploitation. That fear has sometimes made me hesitate, overthink, or second-guess opportunities. But I’ve learned that growth, connection, and meaningful art only happen when I step through the fear, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie the music industry tells itself is that talent alone is enough — that if someone is good, the rest will automatically fall into place. The truth is, the industry often values trends, numbers, and marketability over artistry, heart, or authenticity. It can make artists doubt themselves, feel unseen, or question the value of their work. I’ve learned that success isn’t just about talent; it’s about resilience, discernment, and staying true to your voice even when the world tries to define it for you.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will say that I showed up with heart. That I used my voice — in music and in life — to make people feel seen, comforted, or inspired. I hope they remember me as someone who stayed kind and authentic even when it was hard, who kept creating and connecting, and who left behind a little more light than I found.
