Robert Bradley of Catonsville MD on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Robert Bradley shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Robert, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Depends heavily on the day, for about the first two weeks of September I was on tour on the west coast, if I’m not performing, I’m either teaching voice, writing/recording new material, booking shows, or hitting the gym. I try to schedule off time to have fun outside of music but that’s typically is what consists of a work day for me.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Rob, also known as the musical artist, Power Rob. I’m a singer, songwriter, actor, and vocal coach. Currently I represent both the band Megatronix and myself as a solo artist. I’ve been a vocalist for about 20 years now from rock operas, to pop, to heavy metal, I’ve had the pleasure of performing in a wide array of different genres across the US.

Currently I am promoting my new solo album, Dark Star featuring collaborations with artists such as Miami Nights 1984, Battlejuice, Bending Grid, and Night Rider 87, released under Retrosynth Records.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a pretty quiet kid with a lot of social anxiety. I kept a tight knit group of friends but I was otherwise a class clown and a gamer before I discovered music.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Years ago I was diagnosed with an injury that required surgery, not long after that pretty painful recovery, a new one developed. Around that time I lost a number of close friends, dealing with chronic pain, visiting them in hospice or coping with them passing was compounded by a pretty painful breakup that happened right as the several others passed. The timing was just bizarre, all the while everything hurt and the pain from the first operation made me hesitate to get another one. Through that time, I wrote some of the most celebrated songs of my career, I also launched Megatronix with my bandmate, Robbie Whiplash. I basically threw myself into my work, fitness etc. I wanted to know that while I was here, I could give my music my best. Hearing people sing along to songs written during that time is a pretty profound feeling.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Musical authenticity. I strive to be as natural as possible as a singer both on stage and in the booth, with the dawn of AI vocals I believe it’s given certain vocalists an edge, the more you rely on post production, the easier you’ll be to amalgamate. I obsess down to the microsecond in the booth, taking tons of takes to make sure each syllable has the right tone, inflection etc.

I believe AI has a place in the world but not Generative AI, many don’t quite understand the slippery slope it presents. I’ve seen my work grow since AI vocals has proliferated and I believe that trend will continue, vocalists who used to rely on digital enhancing are struggling to find a way to stand out.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I was the best at what I did, that no matter the event, I threw myself at it and pushed the envelope regardless of the difficulty. What matters most to me is whatever I leave behind as a musician means something to someone. Music never grows old, it’s a time capsule of who you were when you recorded the song, where your mind was, what you were facing. It matters a lot building it and hopefully to others it will matter to them after I’m gone.
