Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Sebastian Lorenz of Los Angeles

We recently had the chance to connect with Sebastian Lorenz and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Sebastian, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Mornings really make or break my day, so my routine, whether I have places to go or a day off, is usually a good cup of coffee, checking in with family and sight reading through some classical pieces or transcriptions. If time allows it I enjoy a walk and putting on a record with some more coffee on my porch.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sebastian Lorenz and I am a musician/multi-instrumentalist based in Los Angeles, CA. I was born and raised in Austria and have been fortunate enough to have gotten steady work here over the past four years or so.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Not sure if there is one answer to this question. I feel like I do learn new things every day and I try to be open minded and reflected and let those things simmer and maybe change the way I view stuff. I am proud of my family for having taught me what I would consider a very open idea of what the world should be. My mom was great about making me come to my own conclusions and understand that that’s just my truth, not necessarily everyone else’s. Moving across the world and traveling a lot was another factor in realizing that.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Take your time, you’re doing good. A lot of good things take time, but have come sooner than I thought they would. It’s sometimes hard to not feel the pressure of time when you’re young. I guess it’s a different kind when you’re old. But some of those concerns held me back from seeing that what I was wishing for was already happening, but maybe in a different way, shape or form.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I once read a bit that Tom Waits wrote for the Rolling Stone Millennium Special I believe, called ‘Sage Advice For The Class Of 2000’. He writes ‘Be devoted to the unification of the diverse aspects of yourself’. That’s something I believe in and a project I work on every day for the rest of my time I’m sure.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I’m pretty confident in saying yes. I think that if I did anything for someone else’s praise I’d run into bigger problems eventually. I am pretty stubborn and will do something just because I do enjoy doing it.
