We recently had the chance to connect with yilin Li and have shared our conversation below.
Hi yilin, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
For me, the most important things are energy and talent. Of course, effort is also a very important factor. However, talent and energy are a prerequisite, an important factor that will lead to success after effort. Because for me, everything is based on energy. Energy is the only form of existence in this universe. Therefore, the fluctuation of energy will cause changes in the material world. So maintaining a high-frequency vibration of energy is very useful for me. It can keep me in a peak state of creation and have unlimited creativity. Talent is also a branch of energy. I think talent is a manifestation of high-frequency energy. It can help me complete my artistic creation better.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an artist, an illustrator and a designer. I also study religious and esoteric knowledge. Of course, all these are to help me better complete my works and have better communication with the viewers who appreciate my works. I am immersed in this and find it extremely enjoyable. The reason why my works are popular is that people can read the information that resonates with themselves or the emotions that collectors need from them, such as silence, sanctity, a sense of spiritual homecoming, and the feeling of soul soothing. I have always been committed to combining Eastern and Western cultures in my artistic creation. Usually, I try to find the commonalities among various spiritual supports to better soothe people’s spiritual wounds and needs.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before being defined by this world, I have always been on the path of painting creation, which is consistent with my current career direction. For me, this is very interesting. Maybe it’s because I have always been interested in art, so I have been engaged in art-related work. This makes me enjoy it. I think I have always been myself and have never been changed. Maybe now I will be labeled with some titles, such as artist, illustrator and so on. But for me, this is not a bad thing. It’s a medal given to me by everyone’s recognition of my works. My fundamental philosophy remains steadfast: to explore and strengthen the intrinsic connection between art and the human psyche, serving the inner world of the public through artistic expression. This profound belief continues to bring me both professional fulfillment and personal joy.
Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
I still remember an email I received from Japan. The content of that email touched me deeply. It was when I was creating the series of works on the Diamond Sutra. A gentleman from Japan sent me an email describing that he saw the serenity of the soul and new sacred images in my works. This greatly shocked me because I was creating an ancient subject in a new way, and there were very fixed images in this subject. The recognition of my subversion made me feel a kind of spiritual connection and surprise, which is an experience I still can’t forget to this day.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
I believe it is the faith of humanity. It has nothing to do with religion, psychology or some specific terms. It is the most tender and pure part in our hearts that cannot be described in words. Sometimes we are touched, we cry with joy, or we feel a peaceful and undisturbed sense of happiness. I think this is the most genuine part of culture. Culture is created by human beings, but this pure land is above culture. It is what everyone yearns for and cannot be described in words. I believe this indescribable pure land is what I need to protect at all costs.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Persist in protecting the pure land of human souls, and persist in seeking my true self.
