Fabian Perez on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Fabian Perez shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Fabian , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
These days, I usually get up really early in the morning, have a moment for deep silence in which I make my Argentinian Mate beverage. Afterwards I start reading and writing. Often, I prepare breakfast for my kids while my wife, Lucy, gets them ready for school. Once they leave, I go to my studio to work on my various paintings or other projects. I return to my house to have lunch with Lucy and then go back to my study to continue working on my art. Once the kids arrive from school, I try to spend the rest of the day together and enjoy them as much as I can!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I consider myself a painter that draws inspiration from the imagery of my past and the beauty recreated especially from the era of my parents. Being from Argentina and going on my immense travels throughout my life and artistic career has allowed me to connect with different people. My brand, Fabian Perez, upholds this standard of Neo-Emotionalism, which is a movement I’ve developed that matches expression in art through extraordinary skill! Recently coming back from my UK tour where we celebrated my 20 year representation by Clarendon Fine Art, I have been working on many special commissions and projects. I am mostly excited that we recently opened our gallery doors to the public which has been a special moment for our team! Fabian Perez Gallery is open from Wednesday through Saturday and located in the Melrose Arts District in Los Angeles. Being able to show my artwork to the city I’ve called home for the past 20 years along with amazing events like our frequent Sip and Paint Classes taught by our gallery assistants has been extremely rewarding!

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I think that life itself has shown me the pathway to having a fulfilling work life. In my learning of artistic skillset, I would say that my teacher Oscar Higa, gave me a lot of inspiration to pursue work as an artist. He claimed that the proportions, expressions, and details of my pieces were extremely advanced. This advice to have a future of creating art made me understand how being confident is essential in whatever work one does.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been many times where life has given me immense challenges, which have almost led me to give up. In particular the loss of my parents in Argentina to the doubts of my future. Despite the chaos, rejections, and let downs of life, I took them as challenges which made me convert my mindset of not seeing myself as a victim but rather a reminder to learn, mature, and grow. Seeing my artwork inspire so many people throughout my travels and artistic career, further reminds me to continue to dedicate myself as a professional painter, which truly fulfills my soul!

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I have had many mentors throughout my artistic career but Lucy, my wife, and the mother of my children has been an unconditional partner in the course of my career. If I wish for something, she will try to make it possible for me. She inspires me very much with various amazing ideas in my creativity and art business. I rely on her ideas because we are maturing together and making our love grow to a higher level every single day.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I am with my family. My life revolves around my kids, they are my everything. Even though I want to keep advancing my craft, my peace truly comes from being a good father!
