Nick Mertz of Arvada on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Nick Mertz shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Nick, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think most people see success and think “wow thats easy, they are doing so well”. However, there are a lot of behind-the-scenes moves that are happening and it’s a ton of work.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Nick Mertz, founder of Pins & Aces, a golf lifestyle and apparel brand dedicated to bringing personality and style to the game. I started the company out of a love for golf and a belief that the sport could use a modern twist—something fun, fresh, and authentic that reflects today’s players. At Pins & Aces, we create premium-quality apparel, headcovers, and accessories that stand out both on and off the course.

What makes us unique is that we’re not afraid to push boundaries in a sport that’s often seen as traditional. Our designs bring energy and individuality to golf while never sacrificing performance or quality. We’re proud to be part of the movement making golf more approachable, inclusive, and expressive. Right now, we’re focused on expanding our product line, collaborating with other brands, and continuing to build a community that shares our passion for the game.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I would say my wife. She has been a believer in me since we first met. She has supported every businesses i’ve started and been involved with. Without her support I wouldn’t have the level of self belief I have today.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
These times come more often than you think. There isn’t just one single time an entrepreneur wants to give up and throw in the towel. It is a constant struggle to overcome but you have to be empowered to push through those thoughts and keep going.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
Our team. We have incredible employees who we trust to make decisions. Sometimes their opinions and ideas are the ones we lean into. The minority opinion always needs to have a voice.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
In today’s society, many people want immediate results. Unfortunately, thats not the real world. It takes time to develop and build something. A strong foundation is key for long-term success. The decisions we make today won’t necessarily have an immediate result or impact.
