We’re looking forward to introducing you to Taneia Surles. Check out our conversation below.
Taneia, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My new puppy, Biscuit — he’s a mini Goldendoodle.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Taneia! I’m a health writer, editor, and public health professional. I currently work full-time as a growth marketing writer for a health tech startup, and freelance part-time as part of my business, Content By Taneia LLC. To be quite honest, I never really saw myself being a writer, but as someone who has had a passion for health education since high school, I believe I’ve been able to find my place in this industry.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
My dad died by suicide in 2022 after years of battling his mental health struggles. His sudden death not only brought grief, but reminded us that if something doesn’t make you happy, it’s okay to move on. At that time, I was working at a place that didn’t benefit me, and it was then that I decided to take the leap and pursue freelance writing full-time. Many things have changed since then, and I’ve resumed full-time work with a company; however, I no longer settle for things that don’t bring value to my life.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Fear of the unknown. I’m someone who likes to plan everything and know what’s to come. As a business owner in an industry that has been significantly shaken up since the introduction of ChatGPT, clients aren’t coming in as frequently as they used to. When assignments slow down, I immediately go to the what-ifs: “What if I have to shut down my business?” “What will people think if I don’t succeed?” These fears are something that keeps me from pursuing new ventures. It’s definitely something I’d like to work on, as freelance writing is not something I want to give up anytime soon.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Many people on LinkedIn claim that you need to post 4-5 times a week to generate leads and grow your business. Is that somewhat true? Yes, but I’ve come across many incredible writers and editors who haven’t posted in months or even years, yet their portfolios still attract tons of clients. I was once super active on the platform, but with full-time work, freelancing, and my personal life, that’s been something I’ve not put much effort into. While I’m not generating as many leads as I did in my earlier freelancing days, I still meet clients with minimal LinkedIn presence.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
Traveling. I’m always working and wanting to spend time with my precious pets, but as I near the end of my 20s, it’s crazy to think that I haven’t traveled out of the country. My goal for the next few months is to obtain a passport and embark on an international cruise, and then proceed from there.
