Rachel Maier shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Rachel, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think the most misunderstood thing about being a makeup artist or any beauty industry job is that it’s not a real job… So not the case. Not everyone can do it. Not only is there an artistic aspect, it is a business that I’m running. It’s not a 9-5 but there is a lot of unseen labor that goes into making whay I do work and be successful!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Rachel Maier. I’m 35 and have been a Colorado resident for 13 years. I’m originally from California, and came to Colorado to be with my husband. My journey here started right after makeup school at the Makeup Designory in Burbank, CA, which I attended after graduating college. I immediately started working at a freelance artist, catering to call makeup and hair styling needs for weddings, special occasion, and photography. Primarily I work in the bridal industry, which is big in the area. That often means I am traveling to destinations like Ouray, Ridgway, and Tellluride to get a bride and/or her bridal party ready for their big day. I also work part time at Salon Polished in Montrose where as an esthetician, I am the eyebrow specialist. I offer services such as permanent eyebrow tattooing, eyebrow shaping and waxing, eyebrow laminations, and eyebrow tinting.
I’m in the business of helping woman feel and look their best and it is a most rewarding job! I’m so grateful to be in this area where my business has grown and continues to grow through word of mouth and also by providing a luxury and superior service!
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was a child I did not believe that I had enough talents or skills to be “special.” I was not the best student in school (when comparing myself to my siblings). I had a passion for dance, but I was no prima ballerina. I was artistic but didn’t know to which aspect of art I could best hone in on it. It took me until college to really see and believe that I had a lot to offer not just to myself but to others, and especially other females.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to younger Rachel, you are capable of so many things big and small just believe in your beautiful power and strength!
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Some of the biggest lies the industry tells you is that you are nothing without following all social media algorithms and trends. Also, that you have to buy every piece of every new product that comes out (which is constantly) in order to be on top of your game. Not true, any of it. I’ve learned to trust myself, trust my instincts and do what works best for me, not what works best for others.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
I actually am a tap dancer…. imagine that! But yes, I am doing work that brings me nothing but joy. I don’t even consider it work, it is a passion and a love bigger then myself that bring me joy and money. Nothing better!
