Story & Lesson Highlights with Tito Crespo of Harlem

We recently had the chance to connect with Tito Crespo and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Tito, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
My pleasure, thank you for having me. Yea haha, there have been some funny moments recently. I’ve recently started watching recordings of myself that I’ve been taking for the past six years, and seeing myself in these video has been funny (and uncomfortable haha) to watch at times. I’ve been filming my music journey by having my friends sit in on studio sessions and record videos. I’ve also set up my phone to record myself practicing, playing/working on music with friends, and even just to talk to the camera about different moments along the journey. They’ve all been giving me a laugh but I’m also proud of myself for these recordings. They show me an evolution in myself and some kind of spunk and vulnerability that I can appreciate.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Yes, my name is Tito Crespo. I’m a singer songwriter. Im from Baltimore Maryland, now I live in NY city. And I’m currently working on my first album.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Interesting question. Well, once upon a time I believed I could grow up and become a tiger, I soon found out that was not an option haha.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d say “Don’t worry, Tito. God has you. He loves you no matter what, and He made you unique—on purpose. He chose your family, the place where you were born, and the special gifts and good desires He placed inside you. He made you capable of handling every challenge you’ll face. Walk with Him, and you’ll go further than your dreams can imagine. I know it may feel confusing now, but God is the greatest love, the greatest power, and the greatest teacher. Seek to know Jesus, and you’ll see. And Tito, always remember: with God, all things are possible.” And then I’d probably say something like “I love you kid, don’t let fear stop you.”

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
For this one, I actually called a couple close friends to hear what they’d say. My brother Al said, “discipline and reliability,” and I can definitely agree with that — those are important guideposts for me. My sister Donyae said, “growing as a person, trying to move in the right way in God’s eyes, loving friends and family, learning how to love them better, being grateful for all experiences, your partner Leala, and pretty much anything you put your energy into.” I’d agree with her too — they all track. And finally, my partner Leala said, “honoring God with your life, constantly improving your character, and succeeding as a musician.” And Lord knows I agree with that as well. Hearing all three of them together, I think what really matters to me is honoring God, growing as a person, and pouring myself fully into the people I love and the music I make. If those things stay at the center, I feel like I’m on the right path.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Well, I hope people say I was honest and loving — that my life defied the odds. That I was a successful artist whose music truly inspired and helped others. I hope they remember that I had a beautiful, wonderful family, and that even though it wasn’t always easy, my story gave them courage to defy their own odds. More than anything, I hope my life points people to God — that through my journey, they can see how Jesus worked in me. If my legacy is one of love and success, grounded in honoring God through my life and music, then I’ll be deeply grateful.
