We recently had the chance to connect with e cindy stein and have shared our conversation below.
e cindy, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Whenever I am holding a camera I am in a world of my own. Regardless of the genre I am shooting at that time. It’s not just the rush of endorphins, it’s how I equalize.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a Fine Art Photographer who chose photography as her medium when I was an art student. I am not limited to one genre. I follow my curiosity. I find one genre assists another in how it opens my way of seeing.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
The tumultuous 60’s and 70’s. There was war. Protests. Music. Culture shifts. How could it not influence me?
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Just when things started gelling, I suffered a physical set back; I couldn’t carry even the weight of a camera. It took many years of rehab and exercise to shoot again. My original opportunities were lost. I came back for the joy it brought me.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
It is not up to the photographer to tell you what to see. It is for you to draw your conclusions from the image (s) presented to you. Everyone brings their own POV to the table.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Ahhh. I was told to take an office job and follow the path; work, marriage raise children….. I was a renegade at a young age. Found the CUNY Baccalaureate Program and studied Photography on my terms; in a studio under the mentorship of a commercial photographer and got accredited for my work. Probably did 4 years in 1.
