We’re looking forward to introducing you to Renee Paisley-Green. Check out our conversation below.
Renee, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My children and spending time with my family. I love to have small journeys with them as much as possible.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the founder of Onyx & Mane Customs. My journey into the wig industry began with a passion for helping people feel confident in their own skin, no matter what stage of life they’re in. I wanted to create more than just wigs—I wanted to create crowns of empowerment for women facing medical hair loss as well as those who love switching up their look.
At Onyx & Mane, we specialize in custom-made wigs and medical cranial prostheses, offering clients pieces that are not only natural-looking but also designed specifically for their needs. What makes us special is our ability to blend artistry with advocacy: we will work clients insurance providers and even the Veterans Administration, ensuring many clients can receive their wigs as fully covered medical prostheses.
Right now, we’re working on expanding our “By Vets for Vets” program and building educational resources to guide clients through wig care, insurance billing, and embracing the beauty of custom hair. Onyx & Mane isn’t just a brand—it’s a movement to restore confidence, celebrate individuality, and remind every client that they are, truly, the CEO of Slay.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was free—free to dream without limits, to laugh without fear, to create without judgment. I was the purest version of myself, guided by instinct, passion, and joy. That version of me still lives within, waiting each day to rise above expectations and stand in my own truth. Something I still strive to achieve daily.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You are enough exactly as you are. Don’t shrink yourself to fit into spaces not built for you—your light was never meant to be dimmed. And hey, it’s okay to color outside the lines, lol.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am deeply committed to empowering people experiencing hair loss—through custom wigs, education, and access to resources—no matter how long it takes. This is more than a business; it’s a lifelong mission to create spaces where people feel seen, confident, and whole. Impact doesn’t have an expiration date, and I’ll continue creating with purpose, one crown at a time.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I deeply understand that hair is never just hair—it’s identity, confidence, and sometimes even healing. Most people see a wig as an accessory, but I know it can be a lifeline, a crown, and a way to feel whole again.
