An Inspired Chat with Altheda Bastien of Connecticut

Altheda Bastien shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Altheda, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is a normal day like for you right now?
A “normal” day for me starts usually around 5:45am. I get Nailah, my 13 year old up take her to school and head to work. Once my shift is over I usually come home and either relax, make products, or sometimes I’ll make content to schedule. I also take the time to check my personal and business emails. I enjoy doing alot of research about my industry as the knowledge helps in order to expand my product line.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Altheda and I’m the owner of Nailah’s Naturals. I work in sales by day and off the clock I make and sell affordable homemade skin care products such as body butters, scrubs, lip, beard and body oils. Currently I am in the process of introducing a men’s body butter line with one scent that matches the beard oil and a couple of other variations as well. Look out for the official product launch late fall of this year.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I credit my late father and his die hard work ethic. He instilled in me the value of hard work and education and it has paid off ten times over. As a kid I’d join him at his office to help out with clerical tasks and other things that he needed. He was always a go getter and that trait has definitely rubbed off on me.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d say just do it and stop waiting for the time to be right because there is really no such thing as the right time. It’s all about mindset and determination.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
My younger sister Allette believe it or not. She always seems to have the answer and is very smart. She has advised me on many things that actually force me to think or reconsider before making a decision. I appreciate and value her insight.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
I watch a bit too much TV I have an obsession with crime shows and documentaries. I know deep down inside I could do something that would be more beneficial to my business instead like create more content which I’ll need to start on with the holiday season quickly approaching.
