Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Olga Sanchez McInerney

Olga Sanchez McInerney shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Olga, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
What’s been sparking my joy lately? Definitely my work as a board director for the San Diego Architectural Foundation! I love being involved in initiatives that promote excellence in design and contribute to the beauty and functionality of our region, including projects that celebrate our unique binational character with Tijuana and beyond.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the founder and President of TREM Lighting, a decorative custom lighting manufacturing company with a unique story: we’re based in Tijuana, Mexico and have been serving clients for over 20 years. Our location gives us a special perspective and allows us to offer distinctive craftsmanship and value to interior designers, architects, and the hospitality industry. We’re currently focused on expanding our collaborative projects with various hotel chains to expand our market.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
From a young age, I sensed there was a world beyond the borders of Tijuana and San Diego — something vast, waiting to be explored. At 17, I left home in Tijuana and moved to London with no plan, no safety net, just a deep conviction and an internal compass that told me everything was possible. That leap wasn’t just geographical; it was a declaration of self-belief. I knew the future was mine to shape, and I was ready to meet it head-on.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’ve learned not to waste energy fighting down. If someone talks negatively about you but they’re not living a life you admire or heading in a direction you respect — let it go. You don’t need to prove anything to people who aren’t on your path. Focus on what lifts you, inspires you, challenges you to grow. Always fight up. Protect your energy, and keep your eyes on the future you’re building

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. The public version of me is very much the real me — energetic, bubbly, open-minded, free-spirited, and endlessly curious. I’m also incredibly passionate about everything I do. Whether it’s a creative project, a personal goal, or simply exploring something new, I give it my full heart. At the same time, I’m deeply driven, and focused. I bring both fire and grace into everything I pursue. What you see is someone genuinely excited about life, always learning, always evolving, and always staying true to herself

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
What truly matters to me is the human connection behind every interaction. Focusing solely on cultural products, financial benefits, or quick outcomes often leads us away from what genuinely makes a difference—the authentic understanding of the person we’re engaging with.

Real value comes from truly listening, understanding their needs, desires, and challenges. It’s about recognizing their emotions and circumstances, and offering solutions driven by care and empathy, not just transactions.

While culture, financial benefits, and results are important, they should be tools to deepen this connection—never replace it. Building meaningful relationships requires patience, compassion, and a sincere commitment to seeing each person as more than just a client, but as a human being. Genuine connection nurtures trust, loyalty, and true growth—foundations for lasting success.

For me, focusing on authentic human connection, patience, and heartfelt care is what creates meaningful impact and sustainable relationships.
