We’re looking forward to introducing you to Michael Glaspie II. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Michael , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
Hands down it’s my family. My wife and I just had our first child and it has come with a ton of new challenges. I find myself reflecting on what I felt like as a kid navigating through life and thinking “how can it be better for my family?”. As the business grows, oftentimes people will only see the success or failure of that one thing. In reality, most of us start a business to replace a job and to experience more ‘time freedom’. The reality of it is running a business takes 10x more time and energy then a job ever would. So, building this business around my family is challenging but incredibly rewarding.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Michael Glaspie. A former Green Beret turned real estate fanatic. I began investing in real estate as a way to gradually replace my ‘9 to 5’ in the military. After spending over a decade in the military and growing my personal rental portfolio to over 100 rental units, I had the opportunity to work as a CFO for a small private equity company. The company focused on small hotels and hospitality assets. That’s where I discovered my passion for real estate met my life long obsession with business and finance. From that self-proclaimed epiphany I decided to start G2 Business Solutions, a real-estate focused accounting firm. What started off as providing only fractional CFO services for busy real estate entrepreneurs quickly grew to offering a full accounting suite to include bookkeeping, payroll, tax preparation, tax strategy, and fractional CFO services for real estate related businesses. Our clients range from real estate agents, syndicators, and investors to roofing, HVAC, and construction services who generate anywhere from $30,000 to $40,000,000 a year in revenue. Our mission is to be the premier real estate accounting firm in the U.S.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a young child my mom was a single mother and she struggled financially. She worked multiple jobs to make sure that my sister and I were taken care of. Just like many of us, she didn’t receive any formal training on how to manage her money or how to grow it. The subconscious belief was that making money is hard and keeping it was impossible. As I got older and my life experiences changed I began to realize that making money is just a matter of exchanging value. If you can provide something of value people will exchange money for it. This is what led me to entrepreneurship. This is what led me to helping other business owners come to that realization as well. The realization that making money is great, but keeping it is the real power move.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
In one word…Persistence! It’s easy to be in a good mood and energetic when you are having fun and winning. Only through discomfort can we really understand who we are as people. Do you shut down when you’re tired? Do you lash out when you’re annoyed? Can you pay attention to detail when you’re hungry? All of these things are important to understand about yourself in life. More especially in business. It reminds me of the iceberg concept. People only see the tip of the iceberg, your success, when in reality 90% of the iceberg’s mass is under the water’s surface. That 90% represents the hard work, struggles, pain, discomfort, and self-doubt that you had to endure to get your head above water.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, but with an asterisk. I speak my mind and I won’t change who I am. However, I sometimes come off as an extrovert when in reality I am an introvert. I abide by the notion that introvert refers to the way that I receive energy. Meaning I feel most recharged after I have had alone time. I feel the most drained after I am in large crowds. Sometimes I don’t even want to talk to people if I am speaking at an event. Which sounds ridiculous but it’s the truth. I think this is the biggest shock to most people when they find this out about me.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I thought about this one lately. What came to mind at first was something grand. I have a genuine passion for helping others and would love to be remembered for helping achieve success in others. As I think deeper it becomes much simpler. I would be eternally grateful if I left this earth and was remembered as a “good guy”. I’m not perfect by any stretch of the word and I would never claim to be. I try my best to be considerate yet honest to everyone I meet. I try not to act with any ill or malicious intent and be cautious with my words choices before I speak them. I am not trying to live a life where I will please everyone, but I would feel happy if most of the world saw me as I am wanting to be seen. Just a good guy.
