Curtis Riggins shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Curtis, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
The most misunderstood thing about my business is the fact that men can’t bake. Normally when I’m out selling my pies and chess squares, people assume that my mom or wife baked everything! They usually start out by stating, “ these are beautiful”, “look at the little cute mini pies, or “”all of your stuff looks amazing!” Then they usually follow those questions up with, “did you bake them! Sometimes they jokingly ask the question first. Did you bake all of this? Then seem surprised once they hear my response, “ Yes, I’m the baker.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Curtis Riggins Sr. I’m from a very small town called Camilla, Ga. I moved to Nashville in the early 90’s. I currently live in Murfreesboro, Tn. My parents, aunt and uncle taught me how to work. Nothing can compare to the field work that I endured during my teenage years. The hard work taught me to have excellent work ethics. When I’m baking, it sometimes feels like I’m not really working because it’s something that I enjoy doing. What makes Georgia Pecan special is that fact that everything you taste, you will enjoy! Georgia Pecan is working on sugar-free options for next year!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My father taught me most about work. My father was a freelance carpenter. Just watching him provide for the family with no education. My dad was a 1st grade dropout. He really didn’t go to school. He literally worked all of his life. He stayed home as a child to help take care of his siblings and work on a farm then learned carpentry skills.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Public speaking has always been a fear of mine ever since I could remember. As I think about my childhood it takes me back to a time where an assignment required me to speak in front of the class. The fear of public speaking had me bound so much that I chose to take a 0 over trying to get up in front of the class and talk. Over the years this fear has turned into the fuel needed to expand and grow my business. Customer service is a key component to my business and overcoming this fear has allowed the community and those that I get the privilege to serve to not only be customers but have turned into family. We have shared laughter and tears as they have let me in through our communication with each other.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
What my closest friends would say really matters to me is God, family and community.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow my customers would probably miss my smile, encouragement, and friendly customer service.
