We recently had the chance to connect with Kimmie Ferrell and have shared our conversation below.
Kimmie , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Music. I have always been musically inclined, from singing in the glee club in elementary school, to playing an instrument in junior high, high school, and college. Music provides an escape.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello,
If you’re reading this, thank you! I’m Kimmie Ferrell, a Black Romance author from Washington, D.C. I craft contemporary, erotic, and paranormal romances featuring relatable characters finding true love.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mother. She was instrumental in me being me, and embracing it however it looked. She never forced me to be anyone else or to act outside of what was comfortable for me.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I know you wanted to attend Georgetown University Law School and become a lawyer, but there’s something else written in the stars for you. One day, you’ll make people laugh and cry. The creativity you put into writing stories will open up doors and bring opportunities to you. Just don’t give up. It’ll be hard. You’ll feel discouraged. Take a break, regroup, and keep going. Also, you don’t marry Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, sorry. 😔
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
There’s no room, or audience, for Black authors who write Black books, especially Black Romance (romances where both main characters are Black) However, time and time again, Black readers have proven them wrong.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Worrying. Nothing comes from worrying, except wrinkles, frown lines, and health issues.
