Meet Sammy Kidd

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sammy Kidd. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Sammy, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

From a young age Ive always “followed my bliss” so to speak. Some might say, to a fault. I learned how to draw because It was a way I could enter my imagination. It did interfere with homework and school work. But I was always more interested in exercising that creative muscle. I knew early on I wanted to be a performer. I would get praise and extra attention for being good at painting. Winning a t-shirt design competition as young as first grade. Learning how to oil paint sceneries at the same age. Once I became a teenager I realized I could combine my love of street art and music with a band. That’s when I knew exactly what my purpose was.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I do consider what Im doing to be a part of my career. Professionally Im just focused on being authentic. It feels like as an artist that’s really all it boils down to. There’s so much static in the world. Everything feels far away. A screen behind a screen behind a screen. It feels more important than ever to express the real self and not something curated or polished and edited into oblivion. I think people who care about authenticity can recognize it from a mile away. It resonates with them. It speaks a truth that cant be denied. It’s not about doing anything just for the sake of being diffrent, but following who you are; and that will grow and change and adapt as you do. We’re not 2-dimensional beings. We’re complex and ever changing. When inspiration strikes, I go to the studio and work out the structure of the song with my bassist and drummer and we record everything ourselves. Mix everything ourselves. All of our artwork on our Tshirts, fliers, website, album covers is art work we ourselves make. We release our own music through our friends or entirely ourselves. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I lived a very unconventional life growing up. You could even say I was raised by wolves. I often think of a favorite book of mine as a child “Br’er Rabbit in the briar patch”. About a young rabbit who lives in a large patch of thorns called the briar patch. Its an incredibly unforgiving environment that many of the other creatures find dangerous and scary, but Br’er rabbit was born there and the patch acts as a means of protection for him. Its his home and he uses this to his advantage. Able to hide away from predators. That’s how I feel about the environment I grew up in. It made me who I am and It taught me a lot about myself and life in general. At the same time I wouldn’t recommend it or wish it on anyone else. I guess what Im trying to say is, make your percieved weaknesses your strengths. Persist no matter what. At very least it will be a vehicle to wherever youre meant to end up.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

I find that my current number one obstacle is adapting to the ever changing live music world. Many venues in DFW have closed down over the past few years. Leaving very few left due to rising rent costs and low attendance since covid. In order to over come this we have put more focus on releasing music from the studio and finding new projects to sink our teeth into. Currently working on a new music video and we’ve been releasing a new single every few months. We have to be a bit more choosey with what shows we take. But we always look forward to a good one.
